10/31/02 People who hate Halloween

10/31/02

People who hate Halloween - and I've known a few of them - suck. This is truly one of the greatest holidays Americans have, free of relentless commercialization (only Hershey's and Spencer Gifts at the mall make any money), plum full of pagan symbolism, and virtual carte blanche for every man, woman and child to splatter themselves with green makeup, sprout boobs and sashay around town. I'll go ahead and say it: Christmas is fine, but Halloween is my favorite holiday.

Around 4:30pm in Manhattan, the freaks truly started to come out - guys on unicycles, various goth chicks, and my favorite, the "first to the party" Uncomfortable Girls who have dressed up but haven't gotten drunk yet and feel disgustingly self-conscious. Manhattan doesn't have the same village feel of Chapel Hill (still your best Halloween night out, for my dollar), but the mass lunacy bubbling up from under the subways is downright palpable.

After getting my wig from Ricky's on 23rd St., I got back to Brooklyn in time for the first wave of kids brave enough to punch every buzzer on a 5-floor walk-up. Dutifully, we all traipsed down to see their costumes, which I know is very "gee I hate Mondays" of me, but ever since my brother Steve started making me robot costumes for Halloween, seeing kids dressed up fills me with contentment.

thank god we're irresponsible and had a bunch of Mr. Goodbars lying around, cuz these kids meant business

I needed a prescription at the local pharmacy, so I walked down to 7th Ave., where the whole street had been blocked off so kids could amble wherever they wanted. Which was a good idea, because most of the toddlers dressed as Spiderman couldn't see through the face mesh and kept running into fire hydrants.

By then, the second, meaner wave of trick-or-treaters came by, most of them from other neighborhoods, and a few of them, shall we say, a little too old to be going door-to-door for Bit-o-Honeys. They're the kids who will probably pull an actual "Trick" part of the "Trick or Treat" if you're not careful. Michelle called from Astoria and said she'd actually been egged. I know it sucks to be egged and all, but there's something about the darker parts of Halloween that fills me with contentment as well (rent Meet Me in St. Louis for a good example).

my favorite costume on 7th Ave was a girl dressed as a black Converse High-Top. How cool is she?

Around 10pm, we met everyone at Jessica Arinella's place on the Upper West Side for a perfect, small Halloween gathering where conversations could actually be had. I dressed up as Tessa or at least I meant to, but I got the wrong color hair. And my boobs didn't move. And she's actually pretty. In the end, I pretty much freaked everyone out and made all the guests 3% uncomfortable (apparently I looked like a successful transsexual) so I consider it a job well done.

me with Karmen Helms

My voice is shot from this flu, making me sound a lot like someone choking Harvey Fierstein, so I couldn't even carry on decent conversations. Just sat around looking pretty. I'd show more pictures of all of us, but my digital camera fell off the top of the refrigerator, making the above shot the last picture my digital camera will ever take. It's just as well, really, don't you think?

Do I suck? I don't like Halloween. I mean, it just promotes greed. I DO however enjoy the dressing up part. Parts of your article were hilarious...but the whole "they suck" statement was kinda rude.

Yes, when I was younger I celebrated Halloween. I did the costumes and went after the candy, but I'm so glad that I've come to the knowledge of the truth. I truly believe that God isn't pleased with the so call holiday, Halloween. it's basically worshiping the devil. Dressing up as withces and other related costumes is like dealing in withcraft, and I know God isn't in any of that. So, think about how you're hurting God when you celebrate halloween. I encourage you to recieve the Holy Ghost. If anyone want to talk to me about recieving the Holy Ghost , my e-mail address is franklin66662001@yahoo.com

Halloween is pathetic, and involves a bunch of rotten kids begging for sweets/money etc at other peoples houses because their parents are too pathetic to give them the stuff themselves.

Halloween is the WORST American holiday ever. It demonstrates how stupid our American society is and how dumb our American citizens are. They all want to get drunk, get nasty, and do crazy things under the banner "just having fun" on Halloween weekends.

I wish all the Halloween crazy partiers will meet Satan in their afterlives and have real "FUN" with him all of their eternal lives suffering extreme pain.

Halloween is no doubt the stupidest American tradition/holiday ever created.

My city held trick-or-treating tonight, while all the neighboring cities will hold it tomorrow. Guess what happened? I had DROVES of kids from other communities, literally lined up on the pathway to my house. The pathway is a good 100 feet in length, and the kids were spilling over onto the sidewalk, too. I spent 60 dollars in candy, and while I live in a fairly upscale neighborhood, I am not Bill Gates, nor do I know him. I will have to make friends with him, though, because apparently it will cost me in the neighborhood of 300 dollars next year to treat a bunch of kids whose parents teach them to "take what you want!!!" (And that is what one parent said to his son tonight, as his son reached into the candy bowl for candy).

I think that trick-or-treating isn't what it used to be. My father would have tanned our hides had we gone to streets not in our neighborhood. Now it seems that parents load their kids up on buses, ship them to neighboring communities, drop them off at one corner only to pick them up at the next, and teach their kids to "get all they can". This results in outlandish behaviors like ringing the doorbell incessantly, and failing to say simple "thank yous" to the people giving candy.

I wish they'd just do away with trick-or-treating. It really is nothing but glorified begging.

bloody little kids coming round to bug the shit out of me, yeah whatever, halloween is crap, i'm not even sure what the meaning of it is any more, greed, annoyence or just a excuse to dress up in crappy masks and stuff like that...

Posted by: halloweensworstnightmare at October 31, 2004 11:35 AM

Halloween is a suck fest. I live in Europe and I hate this annoying foreign import. I cant stress this point too strongly - TOO MANY OLD LADIES HAVE DIED ON HALLOWEEN because of little kids excercising the right to "freedom of expression.' Screw that.

Posted by: deX at October 31, 2004 12:43 PM

Halloween is just a pitiful excuse for overaged kids to scare the hell out of people by knocking at their doors demanding sweets

"piss off"

Get a job

It's a commercialised excuse for so called "fun"

I <3 Halloween, 'tis a day of carelessness, fun, mischief, seances and whatnot with the dead. BUUUUUT all you overly christian bastards gotta try an' ruin it for the rest of us. Really, ban halloween? How the hell do you think yer going to do that?! The only way yer going to stop us fun lovin' peoples of the night is with violence and bloodshed, and i'm sure that little god of yers would frown upon those doings. Oh, and thank you for some sense in these comments Kate. Pfft religion annoys me...

Posted by: Sarah at October 6, 2005 03:44 PM

Geez what the flip is up with all you religion freaks? You are NEVER going to get rid of Halloween NEVER EVER EVER!!!!! Halloween is not Satan's birthday and besides we aren't even celebrating his birthday! I dont see any signs that say "happy birthday Satan!" on them. Halloween shall live on!

Posted by: Steven at October 9, 2005 11:22 PM

Hello everyone. I guess you are all entitled to your opinion, but I'm going to be the one to tell you that Halloween is not Satans birthday. It's a holiday where people dress up in very cool costumes, sometimes funny, maybe scary... it doesn't matter. Okay, where in the bible did it say satans birthday was october 31? please tell me because I can't find it. All you people who think halloween sux are, like I said you're entitled to your opinion are just people with thoughts. But to think Halloween worships the devil and thats why you think Halloween sucks? Then come on.

Posted by: jasun at October 19, 2005 04:03 PM

Ol Hallows Eve is a day i dont really totally understand, i did the dress up thing as a kid. It was fun and can be healthy being it gives you a chance to use your imagination and become anything that you want to believe in. The thing is when you get people that believe in drama-isnt that America. Blood and Gore Gets Chosen out of more positve Coustumes for the shock factor. A person at my old job who you would probably say is goth, taught me waht it really means and it makes sense. Its a pagen day of celebrating anyones death that is close to you. America may not be ready for this being most believe death is the end of you and your soul and should only be grieved over because of misunderstanding on death. But thats american Drama. A Country in its infancy still playing with there toys. One day we will grow up stop playing around look inside ourselves and get real. But the Personality you and I are in right now wont live to see it. The soul will tho- God Bless The World not just america. No Religon Needed Here To Relize That.

Posted by: halloween sux at October 25, 2005 04:10 PM

well i have to say HAVING LITTLE PISS ANTS BUG THE SHIT OUT OF ME FOR A FUCKING CANDY BAR AINT FUN.HALLOWEEN IS JUST BLISS FOR CANDY COMPANIES.ITS ALL ADVERTISING.HAVING LIL PISS ANTS CAUSE 1200 DOLLERS OF DAMAGE OF DAMAGE TO YOUR CAR AINT FUN.
PEACE OUT YAL.

Posted by: E Bowla at October 28, 2005 11:29 AM

I'm sorry, but Halloween is "free of relentless commercialization"? Which Halloween do you observe? It is nothing BUT commercialization. If it were reduced to its bare-boned origins then we wouldn't even be observing the day at all. Halloween is a success-story of the commercial process. Anyway, I say to each their own. I personally find Halloween to be irksome and meaningless. If there is meaning in it, I challenge you to come forth with it, because I don't see it, beyond trivial nonsense. Certainly, having fun does not lever on Halloween? So wherefore the importance? If I didn't live with people who turned it into some gigantic event, the day would pass by unnoticed. OVERRATED! BTW, Halloween isn't a day to "celebrate the dead" nor is it really all that pagan. It's the days before All Saints Day, our Hallowed Saints, hence Hallows' Eve. It's also the Celtic New Year--as pagan as celebrating the fall harvest on Thanksgiving. The dressing up thing is a result of superstition--to keep the dead from possessing the living, by tricking the dead. Most 'pagan' rituals observed on Halloween today are derived from traditions started by Christians, whereas the actual pagan rituals have gone the way of...well...the pagans.

Halloween is the best and all you OLD Farts are just trying to Stomp on OUR FUN SO.....FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! O YA HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Posted by: Halloween Hater at October 30, 2005 10:21 AM

Trick or treat? Piss Off!

I'm afraid I have to differ with your point concerning of how us merry band of halloween haters apparently "suck." It is a commercialised induced holiday and that is the sad fact.

Every year we happen to dread this most pointless and stressfull time, and like many of the posters above said - it is full of TWATS.

People committing arson and other vandalism acts, elderly people getting frightened, people placing fireworks through people's letterboxes, drunken goth twats, people egging windows...

The list goes on - I shall personally be placing a CCTV camera system outside my house.

And please stop associating us halloween haters with die hard christains.

Good day.

To everyone who says that its satans birthday and what not. Who gives a flying fuck, seriously, its just meant to be fun. I'm not going to say that nobody worships satan, I'm just saying that its stupid how you think everyone does. Some people just want their candy, and vandalism.

Posted by: Claire at October 31, 2005 03:53 PM

Halloween is not Satan's Birthday. It is a celebration of evil spirits which was started by Druids. These evil spirits were believed to be at their most powerful on October 31st. Druid Priests would make bonfires (original translation "bone fires") as a sacrifice. To obtain the sacrifices, they would circulate from home to home collecting animals and people. Those who did not give were cursed. I realise that today Halloween isn't celebrated for that reason, it is just society's inability to resist conforming to commercialism and the media but the message, although forgotten, is still the same. HALLOWEEN IS THE CELEBRATION OF DEATH.

Posted by: rachel at October 31, 2005 06:03 PM

no good comes from holloween. evil spirits and scary stuff is no joke to me. it makes me scared, sad, and depressed. good for all of you people who fit so well in society.

Posted by: StarDreamer at October 31, 2005 07:31 PM

um...to ppl like Godservant and anyone who renounced Halloween in capitals...it's people like you who make Christians look like freaks...Hey...i'm a born-again Christian and i love the Lord with all my heart...but if you want to 'renounce' halloween...don't do so by shoving it down people's throats...that only makes it worse...

just a little bit of advice..

Posted by: Claire at November 1, 2005 09:15 AM

StarDreamer, who are you to judge? Free speech, however ridiculous it is, allows anyone to say what they please.

Posted by: Lara Walker at January 19, 2006 05:36 AM

StarDreamer is only giving some logically sound advice to those with violent comments of hatred concerning halloween--what are Christains to expect anyway out of a totally depraved world? Without God's undeserving grace I would be running around saying that Halloween is better than Christmas too.

Posted by: Skillzdatkillz at October 30, 2006 09:34 PM

Halloween is really annoying for home owners. I dread the day that little kids come expecting a truckload of lollies to drop into their bags when they say 'trick or treat'. Hardly any have the decency to even say thank you. OH WHAT A BLOODY PAIN IN THE ASS.

Posted by: Blondie at October 31, 2006 07:27 AM

You're right, Halloween is a pagan holiday. First, let me ask, what is good about a pagan holiday? Do you know Jesus? He knows you and He loves you. Do you want to go to Heaven when you die? The only way to Heaven is through Jesus. Jesus says you cannot follow both Him and Satan. You must choose and then live your life accordingly. When I accepted Jesus into my heart, Halloween was the first thing to go and it came naturally. I packed up hundreds of dollars worth of costumes and decorations and sent them to the dump. Halloween is evil. Do your research. Do you really want to participate in something that is evil? Satan loves people who do because he doesn't have to fight to keep them. I say may God bless you and keep you.

I hate halloween with an unrivaled passion. Why would anyone want destructive little bar stewards begging around their neighbourhoods is anyones guess. My car TF has never been dammaged i just await the day in painful anticipation. Now where did i leave the arsenic.

Posted by: Why Hallowe'en at October 31, 2006 11:17 AM

I really hate hallowe'en. I'm 14, but I just don't see the point. I'm British, and here it's okay for fat little kids with rotting teeth (no offence Stephen) to beg sweets off senile old goats, but not okay for homeless people that NEED the money to beg. It's going against every moral right regardless.

Posted by: grace at October 31, 2006 12:23 PM

Posted by: will at October 31, 2006 01:59 PM

I hate halloween so much! we have just had it here in England and its so annoying. its alright when its 5-7 year olds going round to the houses with halloween decorations, but when its 17 year old boys with scream masks scaring the crap out of elderly people, its just not on. I think it should be banned here, its just an excuse for kids to cause trouble. Im not a christian but even i think that this is one helluva evil 'holiday'. And its so pointless calling it 'celebrating' halloween? whats there to celebrate? Evil? Hate? harrasment? BANBANBANBAN..........

Hehehe... i sat on my garage roof with a super soaker and sprayed everyone who came to my door! that showed them.

Posted by: Jill at October 31, 2006 02:06 PM

Halloween isnt satans birthday. But i still hate it. It was origianlly called All Saints day, and it was when all the saints were celebrated. Then it became associated with mcarthyism and witchcraft (god bless america) and became All Hallows eve, and finally (god bless america) it was named Halloween and all the good things about it were forgotten and it simply became the 'celebration' of all things even. I think thats it but you can always check on wiki if you want! (i didnt lol). Anyway halloweens shite! peace out.

p.s. lol will i like your style! last year me and my sister sat in our window and poured a bucket of water on some trick or treater chavs! xxx

Posted by: wes at October 31, 2006 03:00 PM

I understand these people that don't like halloween because it gives kids a reason to vandalize and generally act foolish, but I'm not understanding these people that are calling it evil and it should be banned. I suggest you check out some articles on the origins of halloween such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_and_folklore_of_Halloween and I know many won't look at this because it's on a pagan website and apparently inherently evil for reasons unkown but here: http://www.neopagan.net/Halloween-Origins-text.html even though it's saying about the same as the wiki article just a little more pulled out and explained.
As you will see, the origins suggest nothing satanic, it's just another religion that christians have spawned a hate for that I believe to be unjustified.
