why does IOWA start with "10"?

8/2/04

I am up WAY too late to have anything coherent to offer you, but I can say that we finished a potential pitch to our TV pilot tonight, and neither Tessa nor I can keep our eyes open.

We do have very good news, however: we're pregnant! Just kidding. A JOKE! A JOKE!

No, we really do have good news: Tessa and I just got signed to one of the best agencies in the world. I won't say which one, because a boy doesn't kiss and tell, but it has three letters and will allow us access to worlds as yet unconquered.

Even though we're at the age when such news will no longer usher in a night of woo-woos, Cape Cods and Dead Nazi shots, it's still an amazing vote of confidence. If you fancy yourself an artist, you really do get very few instances when some large, respected body of peers decides to tell you that you rock.

Funny that artists choose a career guaranteed to be bereft of affirmation, when they are the very people who crave it the most. Oh, the ironing.

Congratulations! That is great news! As a corporate cubicle-dweller who has chosen the "safe" and somewhat dull professional route in life, I admire your decision to be an artist, in all senses of the word. I also admire your bravery to put all your thoughts/fears/opinions on your weblog -- for all the world to see (and for random folks like me to comment on!)

My 5-year-old daughter shows all signs of being an aspiring artist. She is creative, smart as a whip, imaginative, and very in-tune emotionally. People always say, "Well, with both of her parents being lawyers, she will certainly become an attorney!" In response, I always think, "Please God, let her be an artist."

Anyway, I wish you both much success. Oh, and congratulations on your pregnancy! HA!

You deserve woo-woos anyway. Congratulations!

(And hey, at least you didn't tell us which of the two three-letter big agencies it is. There's the really really big one, and there's the really really really big one that handles film and TV and not so much literary...)

I love the CAA website... http://www.caa.com

It's VERY informative!

Hey, Laurie From Manly, if both of your daughter's parents are lawyers, you could probably make it easier for her to be an artist. The problem with being an artist is that, despite how good you are at expressing yourself, you don't have much to say until you're about thirty, and until then you either have a terrible job or parents who are cool with you treading water.

Ian and I are artists in the same way that your daughter would be an attorney. It was the family business.

And Ian, it is weird that good news now is met not with celebration but with a slight relaxation of the shoulder muscles for about five minutes before you start figuring out how it can all go wrong again.

We still had a wee scotch to celebrate, though, if I remember correctly.

CAA is for "Carolina Alumni Association" or "Computers Are Awesome" or "Collegiate Athletic Association" or what?

Kudos nonetheless; when's the next trip to La-La-Land? Remember when the Happy Days gang went to Hollywood? --Talk about writing for TV.

Hi Sean. I am not sure if having attorney parents will help or hinder our daughter, other than to instill within her the lesson that if you are going to go to school for an eternity and amass hideous amounts of student debt, you better hope that you like what you are doing in the end! Anyway, one of my biggest hopes for my daughter is that she loves what she does, wherever her artistic/creative journey leads her.

Whew. CAA. Even I know the magnitude of those three little letters, and I am a mere insurance lawyer working for the Man! Congratulations!!! Does that mean that, by a tenuous association, I am now two degrees of separation from the likes of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg? Is Sam Rockwell represented by CAA? Hey, if you ever have the occasion to be near Sam Rockwell with you digital, do me a favor and post a photo of him! I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the photo of Tessa and Patricia Clarkson, one of my ALL TIME favorites, a while ago. . .

Sorry to ramble. Congratulations again. It is quite the accomplishment. I am rooting for you and your greatness!

Hehehehehehehehehehehe.

I'll give you a hint: it's better than CAA.

Wow! You guys are going to work for the CIA! That's too cool. I feel SO much safer with you two out there spying for us. Go get 'em!

what's with Bud's blog; it's not redirecting. Is this his way of saying he hasn't written anything recently. I'm so glad you and Tessa are going to be CPAs; we always knew Math was a big strength along with all the witty drama.

Thanks for the heads-up. Try this one instead.

It's true I haven't been writing much, though. Why is that? [Sigh]

A joke? Since when?

Posted by: CL at August 4, 2004 5:32 AM

I don't think it's good to enter the CIA right as you are about to have triplets.
