for my first wish I'd like unlimited wishes

9/15/05

Okay, I'll tell you three things I want, and then you can tell me three things you want.

I know the world is full of suffering right now, but fuck it, it doesn't stop a boy from daydreaming.

nano.jpg

1. An iPod Nano - Naturally, being a class-A fey twee shoulda-been homo and all, I lust for anything Apple has to offer, but I just fondled - FONDLED, I TELLSYA! - the Nano at the Apple Store yesterday, and now I want to be its boyfriend and have a million of its babies. 4 gigs isn't going to set the town on fire, and I already have a Shuffle, but this little bugger makes my heart go PITTERY PATTLY PAT.

banrepshirt.jpg

2. This Shirt From Banana Republic - Until I moved to New York and became remotely fashion-conscious, I was perfecting the Aging Fratboy™ line of old college shirts with Pi Phi mixers of yore plastered on them, with perhaps a pair of ratty khaki shorts and skater shoes. I still wear that on the weekends, boys and girls, but the keeping up of appearances at these meetings in my mid-to-late-thirties means the occasional Very Nice Shirt. Something about this BanRep number, with its invisible paisley and "yarn-dyed jacquard" enflamed my inner Morrissey.

3. A Ludwig Drum Kit - Man, I'm tired of ruining pencils, tapping out the drum solo to "Wildest Dreams" by Asia, banging on my dashboard, faking air-cymbal crashes to "Everybody Wants You" by Billy Squier. I WANT THE REAL THING!

1. foot massage - now
2. drum kit
3. sweet nerdy boy who won't be intimidated by writergirl who likes drums
4. foot massage - now
5. oompa-loompa - now

And, of course, my sixth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.

1. cup of coffee - with caffeine
2. sunday Times
3. 4 uninterrupted hours at a coffee shop

4. Linda's cheese fries

Ha! This is timely. I just finished reading "The Overspent American" and made a mental note to devote myself to a life of Voluntary Simplicity (don't focus on wanting more, focus on wanting what you already have). My life of downsizing will have to start tomorrow. Let the fantasizing begin!

1. I don't even know what that Nano thing is, but I think that I want it! I bought the shuffle after you posted about it, and it has changed my life. I have my own private soundtrack going on as I sit in Cubicle World, and it makes my 9-5 more tolerable. Thanks for the tip.

2. I want a Prius.

3. I want a beach house on the Jersey Shore.

See, I am just a simple girl with a dream!

Posted by: tregen at September 16, 2005 06:31 AM

1. Winchester .17hmr low wall single shot rifle with octagon barrel or in the alternative that beautiful beretta .410 o/u I say last week.

2. New set of Ping irons (blades)

3. The big ipod (I love the nano but I would crush it day one).

Posted by: Claudia at September 16, 2005 07:00 AM

1. those really cool shoes in the J. Crew catalog that are completely impractical for my lifestyle

2. fresh buffalo milk mozzarella made and eaten the same day

3. for Ben and Jerry's Coconut Almond Fudge Chip to be available by the pint again

Posted by: Sean M at September 16, 2005 07:00 AM

1. The 60 GB iPod -- the smaller ones are very cool (not to mention cute as a techno-button) but I want all of my music in one place, and already have too much for the 20GB.

2. Every CD ever created by (or sold exclusively by) our friendly neighborhood baristas at Starbucks. Whoever chooses that stuff for them has an amazing ability to tap into my psyche. I know it's a lot more clinical than that (ie. they've done loads of market research) but I choose to believe they did it all for ME. And their coffee's not bad either.

3. A barbacoa fajita burrito from Chipotle. With both of the medium salsas, cheese AND sour cream, and a little bit of lettuce. Yum.

Fun game, Ian, and funny post! Oh, it's good to laugh!

This morning I would like:

1. A really great book that grabs me right from the beginning and won't let me put it down till I'm done and then I'll be sorry when it's over.

2. A large iced chai. (Sometimes a flowering bush I'm passing will smell like one of the spices used in chai, and it never fails to stir a craving.)

3. The pair of tall brown lace-up Kenneth Cole boots that I saw in the J. Jill catalog. R. swank.

Happy weekend, all!

Posted by: salem's little sister at September 16, 2005 08:22 AM

1. I want the lady I sold my horse to 3 years ago to give him back to me for free.

2. I want Ben to get into Providence Day School when he's 4 and continue there through graduation.

3. I want James to decide that he doesn't need to go to grad school so we can stay in Charlotte. However, if he sticks to his plan, I want him to go to Chapel Hill.

Posted by: lyle at September 16, 2005 08:23 AM

CL, if you come to thailand you can have an hour-long foot massage -- we're talking real reflexology -- for, including a generous tip, the equivalent of $8.75!

i'd love to have:
1. ben and jerry's "festivus" flavor ice cream year-round
2. any kind of ipod
3. all the homeless people, kitties and doggies on this planet to find safe, loving homes

Posted by: Bozoette Mary at September 16, 2005 08:29 AM

1. I want everything that's broken in my house to be fixed automagically so that I can sell it tomorrow and move into a great apartment in Cleveland Park.

2. I want Beth to buy my book, which will grab her right from the beginning and won't let her go until the very end. (Note the shameless self-promotion and shouting from the rooftops.)

3. I want to retire and write circus novels all the livelong day.

Posted by: Laurie from Manly Dorm at September 16, 2005 09:40 AM

What I really want is a wife, who will clean the house, do the laundry, and cook a nice hot meal for us so that it is ready when we all get home from work and school. How lovely that would be! And he/she wife can have a nice cocktail at the ready when I get home!

In the alternative, since my husband and I are not legally allowed to bring another wife into our marital situation, I would like to have my beagle trained so that he can cook, clean, and wash clothes. I am taunted daily by the knowledge that while my husband and I toil for coin each day, Jack the beagle is alone in our air conditioned house, sleeping on the couch, without a care in the world. I feel as though I am paying my mortgage so that Jack can relax and nap all day. I want to be the one to relax and nap all day!

Posted by: Beth at September 16, 2005 09:49 AM

All right, Mary, you got yourself a deal--I'll go buy your book. See, self-promotion pays off! And I bought myself an iced chai, so that's three whole wishes down.

Posted by: Susan at September 16, 2005 11:09 AM

1) that our pets would live as long as we do. my beloved 15 year old German Shepherd got a grim diagnosis at the vet yesterday. Sadly, his days are numbered. :(

2) That my husband and I could find another babysitter soon. Our regular one decided to get married...how dare she?

3) vanilla bean frappacino from Starbuck's. Preferably from the Starbucks in the Barnes and Noble where I can spend several uninterrupted hours catching up on all my reading.

LFMD- Ironically I just this morning checked out "The overspent American" from the library. What did you think of it?

Posted by: Piglet at September 16, 2005 11:10 AM

1. Powerball jackpot

2. Democrats to win landslide majorities in both houses of Congress and in state governments around the nation

3. An on-screen kiss with Nicole Kidman.

Posted by: eric g. at September 16, 2005 11:35 AM

1. A 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto convertible, red, with a set of shiny new Pirelli tires.

2. For my house remodeling to come in under budget. (This is becoming more of a wish with each passing day...)

3. An offscreen kiss with Zooey Deschanel.

Posted by: Laurie from Manly Dorm at September 16, 2005 11:59 AM

Susan! I am sorry to hear about your dog's diagnosis. I hope that he is happy and comfortable in the remaining years. . .

I really enjoyed the book. There is a lot of truth to what the author is saying. I profess to hate the "conspicuous consumption" so prevalent in US society, but sometimes I wonder if all of my yammering is really jealousy in disguise. I mean: would I live in a McMansion if I could afford it? Maybe. It would be a lot bigger and presentable than my current abode. Anyway, I think it is a good book. I really think that Voluntary Simplicity is the way to go -- but once you decide to go VS, you gotta do it all the way. No half-hearted attempts.

Oh, but while I am fantasizing, I would really love for one of those teams from Extreme Home Makeover to come to my little shack in Maryland and make our home beautiful! God, I would love that! We are too tired (and lazy) to work on home projects . . . and it is starting to show. How awesome would it be to go on a trip, and return to a gorgeous, hi-tech, and clean house! Either Extreme Home Makeover or Pimp My Ride -- I'd be thrilled with either option.

I already have the drum kit thing covered:
http://gapersblog.typepad.com/photos/pix/captured_200353_00006.html

I would however like a 60GB iPod, though with a combined 7,000 CD and 2,000 LP collection, that still ain't gonna cover me.

I wish Volvo made a hybrid. We love our Volvos, but the article I read today previewing the new hybrids made no mention of Volvo entering the market. How is it that they can make a car that gets good gas mileage is built like a Sherman tank and lasts forever, but they can't build a hybrid?

I also we could have recall elections for the President, if they can do it at the state level, why not for the country? Tell me Bush wouldn't get booted right now if we had recalls.

Posted by: scruggs at September 16, 2005 12:27 PM

Along the lines of wishes, I went across the street today and bought a whopping 3 tickets for the 250mm mega millions. I probably buy <10 a year but I had that $$$ spent before I got back to my office. I tried to figure out how much I'd have to carve out for NPV and taxes, and then how much of a donation I'd have to make to both the Ram's Club and UNC to have them move back the fat cat alumni in the row I'd want behind Roy (unless that's for students then one of those cushioned front row seats will do at midcourt). I'd also have to buy a house on Cameron or such just to use for tailgating, or even have one built in the woods next to the Dome. Of course, I'd set aside a chunk to help save the world, and some to finish the Pink House. But I want those tickets!

1. Now that burritos have been mentioned, I'm jonesing for a honey-lime burrito and chips con queso from California Tortilla (or CalTor, affectionately).

2. That my parents would consider trading in my Rav4 for something hybrid. ANYTHING hybrid.

3. World peace and all that junk.

Posted by: Rebecca at September 16, 2005 01:09 PM

Now this is fun! I wish I could give this list to my parents when they ask what I want for Christmas or my birthday. Unfortunately, they want to keep any gifts under $100. Anyway, here's my little wish list:
1. a hybrid Honda Odyssey with all the gizmos: electric sliding doors, DVD system, navigation, 17 cupholders (in case my 3 kids want 5 drinks each) etc... I'm sure they'll come out with a hybrid in a few years, but my old Chrysler might not live that long.

2. New pots and pans. All Clad or Circulon, I don't know - I haven't done the research to know which ones I really want, but I'm ready to upgrade!

3. A gold Cartier watch.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

I'm not being an asshole like I'm dozing off on this meme. I really want some good sleep.

Susan, I'm sorry about your doggie too. But if he's 15, he must be getting a lot of love!

Claudia, you have good taste.

Posted by: Cris at September 16, 2005 02:42 PM

Very entertaining blog entry. Right now I think I'd content myself with:

1. An instant miracle cure for male pattern baldness

2. A faculty position in Boston for my partner so we can stop living in cities far too distant from each other

3. A South End townhouse big enough for us, our menagerie of animals, with parking for the vehicles we refuse to relinquish despite living in a city

And if I had to name a fourth, I think it would be:

4. More television programming featuring Tom Welling walking around shirtless.

That would rock.

Posted by: KTS at September 16, 2005 03:28 PM

1. A nice secluded year-round camp with multiple buildings on a non-polluted lake in the woods with boats and first-class fishing gear and all the creature comforts – and no money worries - and the privacy to be alone to read and write whenever I like, yet the openness for friends to visit whenever they like.

2. That psychedelics are legalized for everyone based on religious grounds.

3. A Ruger .22 rifle to shoot while living at my beautiful new abode.

Posted by: Rich at September 16, 2005 06:28 PM

1. everything, whether I use it or not, from Williams-Sonoma, including some handsome help to clean up after me when I dive into creating French cuisine in my own home.

2. A small, but workable recording studio.

3. Pilot's licence!

I’ve always thought the office secret Santa thing sucked. Actually, I think all office things suck. Except for spinning on chairs. That’s really fun. But, this internet wish list, thing could be really cool.

Material world
1. The perfect career, of end to end creative, collaborative and challenging projects, that are financially rewarding and culturally enlightening.
2. A small place here in San Francisco, and one in Venice IT, or the Cote d’Azur. A farm on the north fork of Long Island.
3. A Mini-Transat 6.5 http://www.transat650.org/

Spreading the love
1. Spending much more time with loved ones (grandmother in New Bern NC turns 91 next month)
2. JKR to announce an 8th HP book! Surprise!
3. To see Lucy grow up and rock out that drum kit of Ian’s.

CL — The world needs more girl drummers. Eleventh Dream Day had a rocking girl drummer.

I’m glad to see people like footrubs. That bodes well for society, I think.

Late to the game, but...

1 - To discover why-oh-God-why my sweet 12 week old wants to be held at all times and cries his little head off when I try to put him down for a few minutes. Not that I don't adore snuggling with him, but for Pete's sake, I can't even make it to the bathroom alone, let alone get any laundry or dishes done. And I can't complain too much because he's been sleeping soundly through the night for a long time now thanks to The Truly Amazing Would Have To Pry It From My Cold Dead Hands Miracle Blanket, but a little independence and a naptime or two that doesn't take place in my lap would be greatly appreciated.

2 - Weekly spa pedicures (the fancy-smelly-goopy kind). Alone. With my friends margarita-on-the-rocks and iPod.

3a - A winning season for Bunting and the boys in blue, though I'd settle for eeking out a victory (actual or moral) tomorrow evening against Wisconsin since it will be Connor's first Carolina game. Related to that - Connor actually getting through a good part of the game without being too fussy or having a major "blowout."

3b - A winning season for Roy, of course. Duh.

Bonus round - Yeah, count me in on the Extreme Home Makeover with Ty bringing along his TLC pals Evan Farmer and Andrew Dan Jumbo. Heck, forget the Makeover - just send Ty, Evan and Andrew over. Maybe they can just pass Connor around while I try to do some extreme housework...or read trashy novels and drink margaritas...

I kid, I kid...

Tipper Gore played drums. She's cooler than y'all think.

1. "Jeez, it's pretty hard to drive anywhere when you don't have any keys," he said, as returning to his apartment without any keys.

2. "Yeah, that's pretty hard to do," his sexy female neighbor sitting outside casually replied with irony in a raspy voice while laughing.

3. He thought her comment was pretty funny, and went inside his apartment for a shot of gin and water.

Well, I hate to say it, but what I notice reading this particular comments section is how many people (like 3 in 10) have a gun in their top 3 wish list.

That just seems awfully strange to me.

Yay Beth! Everyone else should buy it too.

2. A newer car than my '92 Sentra.
