i'll take "obscure twee britpop" for $2000, alex

11/13/05

My brother Kent posted an interesting meme (through his friend pipecock) where you get your MP3 player (iPod, etc.) and put it on "shuffle" and write down the first twenty songs that come up. I thought I'd give that a go:

1. "Here Comes That Feeling" - Squeeze, off Argybargy
2. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" - Smiths, off The Queen is Dead
3. "Dam Would Break" - Toad the Wet Sprocket, off Coil
4. "Quien Engaña no Gana" - Ojos de Brujo, off Barí
5. "The Girl From Back Then" - Kings of Convenience, off Quiet is the New Loud
6. "Watch Me Burn" - Sneetches, off Starfucker
7. "I Live" - Jason Falkner, off Presents Author Unknown
8. "If I Were You" - Wondermints, off Mind if We Make Love to You
9. "Variatio XXII" - J.S. Bach, from the Goldberg Variations
10. "All About Ruprecht" - from the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Musical Soundtrack
11. "Blue Wonder Power Milk" - Hooverphonic, from Blue Wonder Power Milk
12. "Big Important Nothing" - Self, from Subliminal Plastic Motives
13. "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" - Steely Dan, from Katy Lied
14. Part Two of "The Fortune of War" by Patrick O'Brian
15. "Heavy Spritzer Twist" by chaircrusher (Kent), off Best of chaircrusher
16. "This American Life: Reruns" from Ira Glass
17. "Tall Trees" - Crowded House, off Woodface
18. "Pink & Blue" - Outkast, off The Love Below
19. "Summer Rain" - Primitives, off Pure
20. "Thin Man" - Suzanne Vega, off Nine Objects of Desire

Which, of course, means I'm gay.

How about your random shuffle?

All I have on my Shuffle this morning is U2. I spent a hideous night at Nighttime Pediatrics with Helen (full-blown strep throat!), and I just want to listen to my man Bono until I can get the hell out of here at the end of the day and take care of my baby.

Oh, I also hope your husband took it easy on you for that Terp win vs. The Heels.

That's funny. I've actually starting asking that question to new friends or people I'm in the early stages of dating, just as a conversation starter...which I think makes me both gay and a dork...but I'm OK with that. Anyhoo, here's mine:

Posted by: LFMD at November 14, 2005 7:36 AM

Scruggs -- you are going to love that show! They were great in DC.

CL -- Thanks. All I know is that Helen has had ear tube surgery, many ear infections, eardrum ruptures, big constipation problems, rotavirus, needed stitches on her head twice in the emergency room . . . and none of that compared to the strep throat incident. Good grief! I have never seen her in so much pain and discomfort. I have terrible Mommy Guilt for not taking her to Nighttime Pediatrics on Saturday, when she first started complaining about the sore throat. Dumb me. . . I thought it was just a sore throat. Instead, I waited until she had a 102 fever, was lethargic, and I was near hysterical with fear over my baby. Stupid Idiot Mama!

Nighttime Pediatrics was such a scene last night. I think every kid on a 10 mile radius was sick, broke a bone, had a head wound, etc. Poor Helen. While we waited for our turn, she said to me, "Mama, why is everyone here screaming? I want to go home!" And yes, everyone was screaming -- lots of pain, aches, etc. Again, Stupid Idiot Mama!

Anyway, she is on the mend. And, I feel like a musical idiot. I don't know half of the artists that you all are listening to! Why am I such a musical simpleton?

Stupid Idiot Mama.

Posted by: LFMD at November 14, 2005 7:48 AM

Sorry. . . this is not musically-related, but I love Ian's little community of kind folks, and I just have to confess something. . . last night, after I had given Helen her doses of penicillin and Motrin, I realized that instead of giving her 1.5 teaspoons of each drug, I had given her 1.5 TABLESPOONS of each drug. Am I not a fucking idiot??

So, I was up all night, checking on her to make sure that she was still breathing, did not overdose, etc. Luckily, she looked OK this morning. My husband is home with her today, so she is in safe hands!

Let's say it together now. STUPID IDIOT MAMA.

I feel better. Let's proceed with the musical conversation. When Helen listens to my Shuffle, it is all about KIDS BOP 8. Anyone have this on their IPod??

Posted by: Joanna at November 14, 2005 8:06 AM

I don't have a shuffle. And I can't pick up the best new shows with the rabbit ears on my TV. But, you know what? The cassette tape in my car is The Primitives, Lovely, which I didn't know anyone else still listened to, so I guess we've got that in common.

Posted by: Beth at November 14, 2005 8:32 AM

LFMD, quitit with that stupid idiot mama stuff. You are a very loving mama who worries and does the very best she can with her daughter--even we know that, so I'm certain Helen does. And by the way, you don't have to be worried sick about your little one to make mistakes with the measuring spoons: I recently murdered an innocent pot of chili by using tablespoons of chili powder instead of teaspoons.

Posted by: Beth at November 14, 2005 8:40 AM

My stuff is way too mainstream to confess here. I need a cool older brother to let me into his world of cutting edge music. Here's a question for some day in the future: If you could pick three songs that everyone should know about, but doesn't, what would they be? I'll listen to them on iTunes. I could use the horizon-broadening.

it sure is fun, though...
