It's freezing outside right now. I'm camped out with my friends, waiting for my riser tickets... and everyone is getting a kick out of not only "I hated Duke before hating Duke was cool" but also your "Insider's Guide to Hating Duke" that the DTH still runs.

I love wireless internet.

Go to hell DOOK!

Okay, the DTH page has finally been updated with Tuesday's articles.

www.dailytarheel.com

Ian's wonderful column is featured on the back page for the 3rd year in a row (at least, the 3rd in my college career... it's probably been running since 1990), as well as a delightful cartoon from my friend, Philip McFee.

Like Kate said, GO TO HELL DOOK!

After 2 straight games where the refs have given the games to dook in the final seconds, the new head ACC official suspended the refs from the last game (BC/dook).

Dookies are already crying excuses about why they will lose tonight. Miserable bunch of self-entitled bastards.

Wow. I can't believe the DTH still prints your Duke article. . . that is awesome! And to think, I was a student when it first ran. . . I suddenly feel very old. . .

If you don't like to fight, I don't want you around. You'd better get out before I kick you out. But there is one thing to remember. In this game, it takes more than the desire to fight to win. You've got to have more than guts to lick the enemy. You must also have brains. It takes brains and guts to win games. A man with guts but no brains is only half a player. We licked the bastards in Durham and Greensboro because we had brains as well as guts. We're going to lick the Dookie bastards in Chapel Hill for the same reason.

That's all and good luck.

Although an avid Blue Devil supporter, I still enjoy reading Ian' posting and all of comments of you 'heel alumnus/alumnae. I will be watching the game tonight with a NUCLEAR UNC fan, probably fighting and talking smack throughout, and I will of course, not gloat TOO much tomorrow morning. Oh, and J will have 43. CHEERS!!

Posted by: Cris at February 7, 2006 06:55 AM

Sigh. Am I the only faithful follower of this blog that went to Duke?

And just for the record, my PhD is from UNC.. which means I was there longer and more recently, I still own a house in Chapel Hill and am active in the Boston UNC (but not Duke) alumni club. So I have good Tar Heel credentials too. But all the Duke bashing starts to make me feel a little unwelcome here after a while. I mean honestly.. even J. Boogie gets more respect....

Regardless, may the best team win tonight.

*Editor's note: That should read "JJ will hav 43 tonight" . . . . my mistake. There is probably someone that could correct my Latin as well.

And Cris, to quote a great man, "I feel your pain."

Kevin...43 free throw attempts, or just points in general? You know how these refs have been lately. :-)

Posted by: Kevin from Philadelphia at February 7, 2006 07:55 AM

I think he will probably make it to the line 20-25 times . . . now whether or not they are ALL fouls is another thing.

(Greensboro , NC ) Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced today that a foul is tentatively scheduled to be called against Duke sometime in the first half of their game with UNC in Chapel Hill, next Tuesday, February 7th.

In a joint press conference with Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and ACC Director of Officials John Clougherty, Swofford said an agreement had been reached for a touch foul to be whistled on as-yet-to-be-determined Blue Devil player around the 7:00 minute mark during the first half of the game at the Smith Center .

"We are very excited to arrange something that hasn't been seen in our conference since 1998," said Swofford. "I want to personally commend Mike {Krzyzewski} for agreeing to this uncoventional deal. We all know how reluctant he has been to allow any calls to go against his team."

Krzyzewski insisted that this move was purely a gesture of generosity aimed at rehabilitating his public image in light of recent lip-synching fiascos during several nationally televised games. "The camera did not catch me really uttering the BS-word during my argument with the official the other night. Those really were my lips moving but I wasn't really yelling the word. I'm sure our fans will understand."

"Mike is being a really good sport about this," noted UNC coach Roy Williams. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to play them with a foul being called against their squad, and to have it happen here in front of the home crowd will be especially enjoyable for our fans."

Clougherty says that unless unforeseen intimidation happens during the game, that the scheduled foul should occur without a hitch. "It all depends on whether Coach K holds up his end of the bargain and promises not to harass our crew that evening."

Clougherty also said not to expect any more fouls to be called against Duke this season, but did not rule out the possibility of another one being called in an exhibition game in November 2006. "The Duke AD told me that they are trying to schedule Marathon Oil for a pre-season game next year and we are in discussions about perhaps calling another foul against Duke in that match-up if everyone can come to terms."

The officiating crew for the Duke vs. UNC game will not be announced publicly prior to the game in order to protect their privacy. Swofford said he anticipated a media barrage and did not want the referees to be distracted from their big task at hand. "This is a big deal and a momentous occasion for the league. We need our employees to remain focused so that they can complete their jobs in what could end up being a very difficult situation."

Game Notes: If the foul occurs on February 7th, it will be the 27th foul called against the Blue Devils in their basketball history...........Dick Vitale and Mike Patrick will be handling the TV play by play for ESPN. Vitale says he has no idea what he will say when the foul is called against Duke but he has been placed on a prescription sedative as a preventive measure. (Patrick could not be reached for comment, and was last seen entering a tanning salon in Durham with a picture of JJ Redick)......... A CBS 60 Minutes television crew is planning to attend the game to catch the event on tape for an upcoming expose on the Duke Basketball program and how Mike Krzyzewski uses friendships and loyalty to advance his own agenda.

UNC-CH will get the calls tonight. Too many eyes looking at dook.

Ian's 1990 column is the most popular article/column on the DTH's website today... the stats are updated every 4 hours, but everytime I've been on there, it's been #1.

BTW, has anyone heard any more news about Roy? He was supposed to be in the Pit today at noon but didn't show up. The word is that he was in the hospital for an emergency back procedure. Does anyone know what's going on?

Posted by: Mike U at February 7, 2006 01:02 PM

Thank goodness I found this blog! Not only was I a big fan of Ian's writing as an undergrad, but the "I hated Duke" slogan is just as invigorating as his original DTH article. I read the article again today and I was amazed to find that I remember very specific details about it! There are entire semesters at Carolina I can recall in only the vaguest terms.

Just a random Tar Heel here, happy to have found a name from my Chapel Hill years and to be spitting blood in anticipation of tonight's game.

GO HEELS!

8 and 1/2 minutes in, and yeah, JJ can take it to the cup a little bit. Nice goaltending, GO DEVILS!!!!

That can't be the last post, even if everyone else is watching the game.
Kick their Ass Tar Heels!!!!!!

Half time, and Coach K's squad is up a couple. Sloppy game so far, lots of turnovers, some fouls - several BS calls on DUKE, IMO. Let's see where the game goes. JJ better turn it on a lil bit . . . Sheldon, keep fightin' for those boards.

Posted by: lauren at February 7, 2006 07:44 PM

OH HELL YES!

4:33 TO GO, 71-66 CAROLINA.

Don't let me down Heels!

Posted by: Kevin from Philadelphia at February 7, 2006 08:23 PM

Oooooooooo, tough loss there for you nutty 'heel fans, JJ with 35, not too bad, but McRoberts my my pick for star of the game, except for the fouls. Dockery nearly gave me a stroke - and I am only 25 here - missing those free throws AND fouling . .. way to compund the problem idiot.

my favorite part was JJ dropping a three in some freshman's face, and just kind of smiling a little "Dude, I'm JJ Redick, shouldn't you know how I do this by now . . . "

Really good game overall, see ya'll at Cameron. I'm going to get drunk(er) and call out of work.

Posted by: Dave in RI at February 7, 2006 08:27 PM

I'm 58 and for as long as I remember it's been cool to hate Duke.

Too bad about tonight, but you guys showed guts. Great comeback spurred by the second string, going from 17 to 11 down. Then great finish after falling back seven with a minute or so when Redick went off. But pretty ugly last play. No set up for a three?

Go get the bastards next time. They can be had for sure. Cut down the turnovers, you blow them out in their building.

Posted by: scruggs at February 7, 2006 08:36 PM

McRoberts had his best game of the season.

Look at Paulus hitting his FT's while senior Dockery misses 2 AND commits a foul. We were definitely set up with some chances.

Redick hit the big shots whenever needed. Big time plays.

Thought it was fairly officiated for the most part, nothing, even in the 2nd half against us looked unwarranted...TIVO never lies.

I like how Roy rotated everyone to keep us pretty fresh. I felt Duke was huffing for awhile, but got a great second wind and lack of energy wasn't a factor.

Not a big fan of Green's last shot (as well as Frasor taking up and getting blocked), esp since 4 dookies converged in the paint and we had boys wide open on the arc. Oh well, I guess they don't have Tivo on the court.

6 turnovers in our first 6 possessions of the second half. I almost got in my car to drive up there and wreak havoc...but I was already in my pajamas...and six hours away.

Duke has 4 main seniors in Williams, Dockery, Melchionni, and Redick, we lose our top 7 scorers from last year, and we make it a close one, so I would have liked to see Jackie, Sean, and Raymond all jump over the bench and play.

Posted by: scruggs at February 7, 2006 08:38 PM

oh, didn't like the goaltending called on us. not at all.

Posted by: Mike U at February 8, 2006 07:34 AM

I still can't talk about it.

Posted by: Nate from Philadelphia at February 8, 2006 10:27 AM

Kevin...Shut your Reddick taint licking mouth. That game was Carolina's until some dumb freshmen mistakes. Personally I enjoyed watching Hansborough OWN Williams down low.

On another note...I think I may attend the Duke commencement this year to send JJ's ass on his way because I'm soo damn glad to see FINALLY go, Thank God(Dean Smith)!
