tropic of leo

8/13/06

It's Flotsam Monday!

1. First off, a happy birthday to my older brother Kent, whom I've lionized here and various other times on the blog. Many of you don't get to meet him because he usually only comes to NY for Christmas, and he always misses the Jartacular because of Detroit's Electronic Music Festival. When Kent comes to Manhattan, however, he always makes it more interesting. We once took him and his family to the long-lost, late, lamented coffee joint Big Cup in Chelsea and watching him in there amongst The Gays was probably the most fun I had in 2002.

2. It has been a few weeks, so I'm assuming all of you who read this have done your one thing, yes? I know I'm not supposed to be doling out marching orders, but if you're not going to take even the simplest steps, feel free to move on to someone else's blog, preferably one where a girl shows her breasts. If you're going to stay, remember we have a gentleman's agreement, okay?

3. Have you bought your tickets to see AIR GUITAR and my 24-HOUR PLAY yet? It's the awesome doubleheader on August 26, less than two weeks away, and it's going to rock your socks off. Here are the ticket links:

Air Guitar at 1pm 8/26
The 24-Hour Plays at 8:45pm 8/26

I'm all ears as to a place to meet afterwards. You're all coming, right? Salem? Annie? Peter Rukavina on Prince Edward Island?

4. Hey, the Frappr map for this blog is sooo much nicer now:

Add yourself if you haven't yet!

5. It's a busy week for our careers; wish us godspeed, won't you?

OK, though I am still technically in LA (and don't intend to leave anytime soon), I moved myself on the Frappr map thingy. Y'see, I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (which makes me a "Yooper", derived from UP-er), an area that I don't feel gets enough geographical respect...unless Al Roker occasionally mentions a snowstorm there. Case in point -- when I typed in my hometown zipcode, my new blue flag places me in the frigid waters of Lake Superior. And though I grew up very much NEAR the water, I did not grow up IN the water. Hmph.

Anyway, just doing my part. G'night, all.

P.S. Godspeed, Ian and Tessa. I decided earlier today that this week was going to be my week for good career news...may it also be yours...

Happy birthday, Kent!

By the way, I'm a broke college student, but even I did two things on that list. I had my parents do three things.

Godspeed to both of you this week!

done and -- (er, I was gonna say done again, but it's never really done, is it? I mean, I gave money to the carbon offsetting thing and switched my lightbulbs, but that's all. I hope what little that is, what little we can all do helps...)

happy birthday to the wise and benevolent kent.

ian, tessa, sean williams and sean m: best of luck.

Knock 'em dead!

Thanks for the reminder to DO SOMETHING!
It really is easy, even for a procrastinator like me.
I've ordered new lightbulbs...simple.
And, donated to carbonfund...painless.
I know much more needs to be done and you should be commended for your example and raising awareness.
Best of luck to you all in your endeavors, especially this week.
I have tickets to both events as I will be in NYC that weekend.
Can't wait!

Carbon-offset.
Guilt-ever so slight assuaged.
Tickets-not bought.
Guilt-roaring back.

happy VJ DAY everyone!

Maybe I should have been more specific. I complain that the Upper Peninsula of Michigan doesn't get enough press, only to have reports come out later in the day that a terror plot to blow up the bridge that connects the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula (where, for the record, people are referred to as "Trolls" because they're under the bridge) was thwarted.

Oy.

Sean M. - Funny you bring up the U.P. I was just up near there for a week. Have you ever been to the Paulding Light? It's been a few years but we get there once in awhile. And we exported some pastys and had them for dinner the other night. Yay Upper Peninsula!

Ian, good luck and, as I say every time I put a pie in the oven, go with God! (No atheists when something big and slaved over is on the line.) I've already mentioned my fulfillment of the gentlepersons' agreement, but alas, I don't think I'll get to the plays--my in-laws will be in town that weekend, and though I'll float the idea, I'm betting it won't fly, partly because I'm already absenting myself on Sun. a.m. to run the first ever NYC half-marathon on the roads, and partly because my father-in-law is embarrassingly narcoleptic where theater is concerned.

Ken -- No, I've actually never been to the Paulding Light. My father and stepmother have mentioned going a couple of times, but never when I've been around. I do love a good pasty though. And to continue the lesson for the uninitiated, that's prounounced like "pass-t" as opposed to those things that cover a stripper's nipples. Sort of like a meat/potatoes/assorted veggie calzone...usually slathered in either ketchup or brown gravy, depending on your tastes. Yum.

Ian,

In my new house in Forest Park, Illinois, I'm having the most eco-friendly washer/dryer currently on the market installed. I'm still trying to find the local service providers for various utilities, so I don't rule out taking other measures on your list.

Posted by: ken at August 14, 2006 10:25 PM

Thanks for clarifying pastys, Sean. I'm in the catsup man myself. And do check out the Paulding Light sometime, better after a few nips of some Scotch though.

And word to Eric G. Our last house was in Forest Park where we spent (and still spend) many a night at The Beacon (on Circle Ave.) We miss FP.

I just joined Zero-Carbon Car. I wish I could have signed up for the Green Solution, but it’s completely subscribed.

Thanks for your reminder!
