I posted the above picture on a blog I wrote back in March 2003, when we first started bombing the shit out of Iraq. In those days, when we spent winters along the icy Roeliff-Jansen Kill running behind our land, I'd hike over our hill, close my eyes, and listen to the water. It was a cooling salve when I'd get too angry contemplating my role as an American, powerless to do anything about a government that was elected for me.
Lately, I've avoided politics on this blog, not because I've run out of things to say, but because there are too many. Besides, the intractability of everyone's viewpoints - mine included, I guess - began to smell like unrefrigerated fish. Even now, what could I possibly say about stunning evangelical hypocrisy, or Republican dirty telephone tricks or Bush now saying oil is why we should stay in Iraq after kicking in the teeth of anyone who suggested oil was why we invaded Iraq in the first place? It has been a sickening six years, and atop a mountain of regrets, I place my penchant for political hand-wringing; I should have stopped years ago.
But I post the picture of the roaring Roeliff-Jansen Kill ("kill" is Dutch for "creek," hence "catskill," "Fishkill," etc.) because that particular stream runs unabated through several counties in New York's 20th Congressional District. Usually surrounded on all shores by old-school Rockefeller Republicans, Roe-Jan now runs through uncharted territory - possible Democratic lands.
For the first time, polls showed our candidate Kirsten Gillibrand up three points on that miserable (alleged) wife-beating crook John Sweeney, and the stream has taken on a fresher, bluer hue. As I have oft said when discussing this race, I have mild expectations, but even the whiff of change in those parts signals a country that just might not want to self-destruct.
One term they use in AA (I'm told) is "when the pain of staying becomes greater than the fear of change, you will take action." The question for today's election is this: how much do you fear change? If it petrifies you, then perhaps you should vote Republican. That's the only advice I have left to give.
And in the community spirit, I'd like to leave the comments open to everyone who would like to add One Thing to Consider when voting in today's election. It can be anything. Simply write down the one element you would like every fellow voter to know before they pull the lever. It's your last little whisper in the ear before the curtain closes.
Happy voting!
If the terrorists could vote, which national political party would they vote for?
Mom, forgive my question ending in a preposition.
Friends of Bill may use the phrase cited by Ian, but they took it from French author Anaïs Nin: "And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
Since DFB's&T's has the war covered, I'd ask folks to consider whether they think they already pay enough in taxes (and this past year saw record tax receipts with lower taxes).
And speaking of dirty tricks, I guess there wasn't room in this blog to mention that liberal activist group ACORN was recently busted for filing hundreds if not thousands of fraudulent voter registrations in the swing state of Missouri.
All political leanings aside, when you step into that booth and pull the lever, you need to vote for the person that best shares your values and will accomplish what you want accomplished.
Change for the sake of change is rarely good - vote with your head, heart, and passions and let the chips fall where they may, knowing that in only two years a far bigger choice is on the horizon.
Telephone tricks are better than slashing tires on elderly GOP voter vans which Democrats were arrested and CONVICTED of in 2004.
The left wing ACORN group, which DailyKos supports, had workers filing tons of fake voter registration forms.
Kirsten Gillibrand does not fully support the Constitution, the way she talks about the right to own firearms on her website is very restrictive, it would be dangerous to have her controlling how people can defend themselves on their own private property.
Best question to ask yourself while voting is if you think that Osama and the rest of the radical muslims will fear someone like Nancy Pelosi running the House, we can't let the likes of Pelosi and Gillibrand take over.
I just spent a week rebuilding homes in Treme and St Roch in New Orleans. I shouldn't have had to.
Just be sure to vote. A healthy democracy is the result.
Are we better off now than we were 4 years ago?
"I just spent a week rebuilding homes in Treme and St Roch in New Orleans. I shouldn't have had to."
Republicans are responsible for the weather?
"Are we better off now than we were 4 years ago?"
Undoubtedly so. The economy is doing great.
fun voting for Lynn Swann today...have no idea what his political views are but that mutha' sure can catch a pigskin!
There's a commercial that has been running here in California that says, "Think outside your bubble." I like that.
"I just spent a week rebuilding homes in Treme and St Roch in New Orleans. I shouldn't have had to."
No, you shouldn't have had to. You should have had a government that could have responded to the devastation in New Orleans competently. You should have had a president who, rather than lamenting the state of one millionaire senator's second home after Katrina swept through, had given his government the tools to protect its citizens, give them shelter and provide for their common welfare. You should have had two houses of Congress that could be trusted to create responsible environmental policies and to stop the president from treating detainees like animals. You should have had representatives and senators that chose not to revel in their own mediocrity, but to remember that they serve at your pleasure, not theirs.
PLEASE vote. Your vote tells your representative that you're paying attention. These are your public servants, and their fate is in your hands. How many people in the world get to say that?
The only thng I want to add is for the Ohio voters. Please turn your voting cards over, there were more candidates/issues on the other side!
don't vote from a place of fear and war imagery unless you want to live that way.
vote for hope.
vote for your vision of the future.
be the change you wish to see in the world.
these are the values i am voting for today:
grassroots democracy
ecological wisdom
social justice and equal opportunity
nonviolence
decentralization
community based economics
feminism
respect for diversity
personal and global responsibility
future focus and sustainabilityand i also plan to vote for one democrat, Barbara Lee. and in the next presidential election i would also vote for Barack Obama.
On my "Things to Be Happy About" pull-off calendar, one of today's five items is "the right to vote." I know that all xtcian.com readers are ardent voters, but please remind everyone you know that we mustn't take this privilege for granted. Regardless of how we vote, the first step is simply TO vote.
I love this country and the concepts it was founded on. Jefferson said (I'm probably paraphrasing) "We're the only nation built on an idea." An important part of that idea was the balance of powers between the three branches of government. Today we have the chance to restore some of that balance. For me, that's a good enough reason to vote Democratic.
Of course there is much, much more, but our lopsided government needs to be put back in balance, or the whole system is will continue to race downhill with the brakes broken.
The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Ronald Reagan
My One Thing: Don't blindly vote a straight party ticket "just because" -- because you're sick of Republicans or Democrats, whatever. You're smarter than that, and so should this country be.
Vote for individuals - for their ideas, their intelligence, their integrity, their willingness to listen and change based on facts and compassion.
I bet this year people will disagree with me about this, but I'm stickin' to my story.
Yay! I'm going to vote now. It always feels so good, no matter what the outcome.
time to remember those good old checks and balances the constitution anticipated.
ian - abc news showed a little clip on kirsten g. on the evening news the other night in a piece about female candidates. hope she is part of a new democratic house.
If there are people in the world that are hoping for an all-out war between Islam and the west, who do you think they would vote for? If the aim of "the Terrorists" is a battle between the U.S. and the middle east then who is doing their bidding?
I mean, these aren't the questions I asked myself this morning. I went in thinking "who is gonna make me feel good about being an American?" and maybe that's the question that serves us best, since we can define what that means to us.
Terrorists would surely vote for the Republicans, because they can't seem to find or kill Osama.
I pay plenty in taxes and yet I still hear about homeless children in NYC, so I'd gladly reallot the money to pay to help people who really need it. Actually, I'd like my taxes to go to a more efficient govt, and I think both parties are for that.
Simply go vote, and revel in the fact that not a single gun was pointed at you when you walked in, nobody threatened your family when you left.
As screwed up as our system can be sometimes, there are vast reaches of our world where the simple ability to express ones wishes for any aspects of government will not be tolerated.
If you love apple pie, God and America, vote Democrat!
VOTE!
If I were a terrorist able to vote....hmmm,
Part of my strategy would be to lure the US into a never ending conflict to bleed the financial and blood treasure of the country. Of course, if possible, I would attempt to do this on friendly, Islamic ground so as to provide fertile recruiting for additional terrorists. Finally, I would hope to elect a party that blindly refuses to see the trap I have laid for them so as to ensure my long term victory...
God, hard to say who I would vote for but I guess I would choose the devil I know vs. the devil I do not know so I would vote Republican since I can't see how any other party could help me more than they have.
9 million kids in this country have no health insurance. Are you happy about that? Do you care more about your tax bill and your big car and house than those children? Are they less valuable than you?
"The likes of Pelosi and Gillibrand." So...women?
Yes, by God, let's not let the women take over, what with all their warmongering and lying and torturing and hitting on underage pages and...oh, wait.
Terrorists would vote for American Republicans, for the following reasons:
1. Republican policies have been the biggest recruiting force the terrorists have ever had.
2. American Republicans share the terrorist goal of a restrictive, authoritarian state ruled by fundamentalist clergy.
3. American Republicans favor sending Americans to be killed in the Middle East, so that the terrorists don't have to travel to America to kill Americans.
Thanks, CD. You said it better than I ever could.
Consider this: If you performed in your job as Bush, Rumsfeld, Chertoff, and friends have would you still be employed in that job?
"9 million kids in this country have no health insurance. Are you happy about that? Do you care more about your tax bill and your big car and house than those children? Are they less valuable than you?"
Wow. This is really something! How selfish of me to own a car and a house while children have no health insurance. I obviously think I'm more "valuable" than they are. (Note: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 6.3 million of those 9 million uninsured children are already eligible for government programs Medicaid and SCHIP, but are simply not enrolled.)Maybe you missed it, Neva, as the media has been loath to report it, but tax receipts are up 13% ($250 billion) over last year thanks to the Bush tax cuts. Raising taxes will stall the economy, reduce tax revenues and have the very opposite effect that you are seeking. So, no, I don't want a higher tax bill, to say nothing about universal health care, which systems are proven disasters.
"Senior terrorist leaders interviewed by WND . . . say they hope Americans sweep the Democrats into power because of the party's position on withdrawing from Iraq, a move, as they see it, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.
"The terrorists told WorldNetDaily an electoral win for the Democrats would prove to them Americans are "tired." . . .
"Of course Americans should vote Democrat," Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group and the infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, told WND.
"This is why American Muslims will support the Democrats, because there is an atmosphere in America that encourages those who want to withdraw from Iraq. It is time that the American people support those who want to take them out of this Iraqi mud," said Jaara, speaking to WND from exile in Ireland, where he was sent as part of an internationally brokered deal that ended the church siege."

Wow...World Net Daily seems like a really reputable, professional mews outlet. I certainly believe everything they say, especially when they tell me about the evil influence of "gay Wal-Mart" bringing the righteous to tears - and offer me a "guided tour through America's toxic entertainment industry."

But one really doesn't need to read it in a paper to know that Democrat victories in the election are also victories for jihadists in the WoT. That's common sense. Democrats want us to surren-, er, "redeploy the troops" (a turn of phrase similar to describing a tax hike as a "temporary refund adjustment") from Iraq, which the terrorists will interpret (justifiably) as a win for them.
I suppose they'll also interpret it as a victory if the country continues to blindly support the president whose anti-WMD...i mean, anti-terror...wait, no - i mean, anti-despotism...or maybe it's anti-expensive oil...war in Iraq has kept Osama safe and sound in the hills of Afghanistan for five years and counting.
looks like your billboard worked and kirsten g is going to dc. this is a good night for the dems.
Matt:In honor of your citing the wingnuts of WND, I bring you Bill Clinton's speech at a campaign rally for Jim Webb. To quote the decider "We've had a referendum, it's called an election".
BEGIN CLINTON SPEECH:
The campaign that has been run against Jim Webb is just the sort of most grotesque example of this formula they're running all around the country. It goes something like this. This is their message, pretend I'm their guy: 'OK, we really messed up. I mean, this Iraq deal didn't work out too good and now we put Afghanistan at risk. And we probably shouldn't have put that horse show association guy in charge of FEMA... And you know, it was embarrassing when our senior White House aide that dealt with Mr. Abramoff had to go to prison. But Karl Rove didn't know him very well, he only had 485 contacts with the White House. And he's shy, Karl Rove, you've got to know him 486 times before he knows you. Yeah, we've got a lot of problems but you've still got to vote for us. 'Cuz my opponent is a slug. And they're going to tax you into the poorhouse. On the way to the poorhouse you'll meet a terrorist on every street corner. And when you try to run away from that terrorist you're going to trip over an illegal immigrant. You can't vote for 'em. I mean, is that it?'
END CLINTON SPEECH
omg, rumsfeld resigned? that is hysterical, right on cue.
Chip, here's Jim Webb on Bill Clinton, not so long ago:
"I cannot conjure up an ounce of respect for Bill Clinton when it comes to the military. Every time I see him salute a Marine, it infuriates me. I don't think Bill Clinton cares on iota about what happens in a military unit."
"[The Clinton Administration is] the most corrupt administration in modern memory."
And Webb slung the mud as much as anyone in this election.
Well, Matt, that just shows you how incompetent the administration is...so bad that Webb and Clinton felt compelled to work together.I'm sure Webb did sling mud but I'm just ecstatic that Senator Macaca is taking his noose and Confederate flag and headed home.
