Is there anybody in a leadership position in America that can be as much of a jerk as Koach K, day in and day out? Okay, obviously the entire Bush administration, and every manager of a Home Depot, but the Dook Koach always manages to cap off every win - or in this case, a loss - with a statement that makes you want to throw bricks of gouda at his rat face.
Consider this one, after their awesome loss (at home) to Virginia Tech (who had lost to Marshall):
In this decade we have won about 85 percent of our games, a lot more than anybody. [This team] is not those teams.
In essence, he is saying that HE is the mark of constant quality, and any besmirching of his record is the fault of the piece of shit team he currently has. You rarely hear people so deftly throw their entire bunch of kids under the bus for the sake of their own ego, but if you're looking for a modern-day Narcissus, gaze no further.
Don't get me wrong; I'd gladly metaphorically throw any Dook player under any bus you've got coming. That Jon Scheyer kid makes my pantapoons itch, and Greg Paulus - another in a seemingly interminable line of annoying white Dookies - definitely deserved to be teabagged.
What's that? You didn't see the Va Tech guy gently graze his nut hairs over Paulus' forehead en route to a layup? You weren't reminded of Vince Carter jumping over that French guy in the Olympics, only pausing to dip his écrous dans sa bouche? Well, by all means watch it here!
I'll go into more detail about this later, but 2006 and 2007 seem to be years when the truth comes out from hiding, when the unjust get what they deserve, and when the tower of lies comes tumbling down. I will really enjoy watching this happen to Dook, who have benefited from the unwarranted (and, in my opinion, slightly racist) largesse of sportscaster punditry. Koach K only has one set of vertebrae, and he already used them to get out of one season; I doubt it's an option again.
And the true glory? My beloved Heels are as fun to watch this year as last. Young, crazy, talented, humble and exciting. It's the gift those awful years gave us - the ability to truly love each win, no matter how lopsided. I used to have a undercurrent of dread for each Dook game, and now I salivate like a lion who has just spotted the zebra. They might get away, who knows, but the chase makes life worth living.
Brilliant way to begin again. Go Heels! Dook blows and K blows hard!
And...he's back! ;-)
I love the close up shot of K in the second half saying "G-D" Such a nice guy. Our son has a bedtime story he likes us to tell about mean coach K.
But, you'd better start lovin' up on the Paulus family; Greg's brother is our QB recruit for next fall.
Ian, it took you 37 years to bring your own word into the English language with "Coastopia". I predict that Lucy has already launched "pantapoons" at the age of one! I am personally going to incorporate the use of pantapoons into my everyday life. So far I like "Right in the pantapoons!" and "That takes pantapoons!" I'm considering "To proud for her pantipoons" and "Cool party? Shiiiiiut.. It was a a freakin pantipoon parade!" I'm waiting for the right celebrity to catch on for global exposure. The unfortunate part is that I would not permit precious Lucy to hang out with anyone who used her word in such a crude manner. Any more suggestions?
Oh how I just LOVE me a nice, tart anti-dook Ian rant. It goes well with a Carolina victory the night before -- much like a beer with pizza on a Friday night.
Welcome back, Ian! Seems like you're feeling better...
:)
We'll be atop the polls when they come out tonight or tomorrow.
The funniest indictment of dook basketball is how Paulus still FLOPPED even though the slow motion replays CLEARLY show that the VT player cleared him. What a poons.
As the announcers said, if not for the long shorts, that guy would have cleared Paulus by several inches.
lots of photochops of this on BoB - a couple of examples:

I lost my DSL over the weekend, so I'm behind - what's the username you registered?
Compare and contrast. Well, there is no comparison between the two, so here is the contrast. Saturday afternoon, cut to Coach K. He yanks a towel from some guy behind the bench, uses it and throws it back to him, all the while yipping away like a little rat.
Sunday evening, the announcers go to a little filler piece talking about Roy's nickname as Mister Rogers. Roy explains the name followed because he always says "It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood." He tells his team they are playing ball for Carolina, all your games are televised. What could be better?
Coach K criticized Paulus for his shot selection at the end of the game. "You have to know time and score. If you are down by 3, you're going to take a 3. . . We didn't do that."
Roy encourages and praises instead of criticizing. Before the season started, a friend of mine went to hear Roy talk. When describing this year's team, he simply said, "I wish we could double the size of the court and play ten on ten."
Ian,
Nobody captures our side of The Rivalry like you do. You have a knack for "calling a K a K".
Looking forward to more Duke-truths this season.
The Tar Heels already beat my alma mater, Penn, last week, and I didn't mind at all.
ok, this is gonna suck as much for me to say as it for y'all tarheels to "hear," but it's in keeping with one of my new year's resolutions, which has me giving people (even apparently evil people like coach k) the benefit of the doubt whenever at all possible, so here goes: couldn't his statement be an acknowledgement by him that coaching can only take a team so far, and that you have to have talent (which these current sods - i mean this current squad - does not have as much of as past teams)? couldn't he have been saying that the dook teams that were more successful would have been successful with any other coach?
now THAT was a painful exercise - i hope all that ying-yang people talk about suffering being good for the soul is true ...
by the by, did paulus have any post-loss comments about the quality of the VaTech guy's pubes? just curious ...
Yaytee,
A good coach, unlike Rat Bastard (which is what I affectionately call that rat bastard who coaches at dook), might lower unfair expectations of an over-achieving team despite their meteoric start. To wit, last year, Ol Roy tempered the rising expectations of our fan base, reminding us that Tyler et. al. were young and not necessarily as experienced as the '05 Champions.
He did not, however, remind the fans or the press that he has the best winning percentage of any active coach--including Rat Bastard/Pete Gaudet--and that last year's team should not diminish his stature in that regard despite their performance.
Subtle, perhaps.
But therein lies the difference.
Casting aside all subtleties, you have two model basketball programs who--it may be argued--do things the right way. (Of course, Carolina does not have the stain of Corey Maggette on it's conscience . . . but then again, neither does the Teflon Rat Bastard, as nothing ever came of that violation.)
We Tar Heels, however, happen to know that dook and their fan are a bunch of whiny, spoiled Rat Bastard clones.
Ask Pete Gaudet if Rat Bastard should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Also, if you were a real man and a real leader of men, why would you be concerned with whether some exceptionally bright and devilishly witty Carolina kids tented in your village. With a mere wave of his hand, Rat Bastard could make the following link a non-story.
But he doesn't. And that's why we Tar Heels hate him so. It feels good to foster a hate this strong.
Now, since it's obvious you did not attend Carolina (since you dared mention the notion of giving the Rat the benefit of the doubt), where did you go to school, Yahtee?
DDrake above, send me an email and I'll forward you some other great anti-dook stuff you may not have seen. Linda R. in your office can get you my information.
Ian, it's so good to have you back! You are obviously feeling better.
I almost cried when I read that UNC is now ranked #1 for the first time since 2001. Greg, I can't wait for your email with all the inside scoop!
Does anyone know where the phrase "throw someone under the bus" comes from? Just curious. I haven't heard that one in a long time.
Coach K. The worst.
It's not enough to suffer through 4 years of Wojo, Chrissy Collins, Quinn Snyder, Tommy Amaker and the like on the court. We have to see them for years to come on the Dook bench. That's what I hate about Dook.
