you just haven't earned it yet, baby

Today's CODE WORD question is a good one: my nephew Sam is applying to UNC, and amongst the usual application stuff, they started asking short-answer questions a couple of years ago. One of the questions was this: Who, over the last 50 years, do you hate the most?

At the end of the questionnaire, the admissions board revealed the most popular responses. Sam came back to the hotel and told us the number one most hated person amongst all applicants, apparently, by a wide margin.

So I put it to you... who do you think it was?

Jay BOOglie (hopefully this spelling will not be included in questionable content)

Posted by: Sean M at March 6, 2007 09:20 PM

over the last 50 years? i'll guess george w.

Posted by: Sarah at March 6, 2007 09:53 PM

Coach K? :)

Posted by: GFWD at March 7, 2007 04:33 AM

It should be rat bastard.

But for 17 year olds applying now, who may only have 9 years worth of experience beyond Elmo and other kid stuff, you've gotta focus on "hated villains" from about 1998 forward.

To be fair, it's really likely from 2001 forward, as 9/11 is the first seminal world moment for most kids that age--like Reagan getting shot and the Space Shuttle Challenger for our generation.

So, I guess Osama Bin Laden.

I am embarrassed that such a question is part of the admissions process at my beloved UNC. A stupid question.

There is no 1 person on earth that is important enough for me to waste enough energy on them so that my dislike rises to hate. People that "hate" other people need to get on with their own lives.

Having said that . . . #1 choice must be terrorists, Osama, et al. If it is the President, then I am sad for UNC.

Posted by: jen at March 7, 2007 04:44 AM

The question is actually "My least favorite famous person from the last fifty years is _____"

Posted by: emma at March 7, 2007 05:30 AM

The obvious answer is Usama Bin Laden. But based on the way the question is presented and due to the title of the post, I'd guess that the popular answer is not UBL. I did just find a thread where one person answered Paris Hilton to the question. Talk about wasted energy, DFB&Ts.

And when asked if they could travel anywhere with no limitations, it appears that the most popular response is Hogwarts School of Ministry & Magic.

Posted by: Lee at March 7, 2007 05:49 AM

it's gotta be Bin Laden.

Is this a Morehead interview? Or does everyone get interviewed these days?

Posted by: craighill at March 7, 2007 06:09 AM

no question it's hillary

Posted by: josie at March 7, 2007 06:24 AM

Dick Cheney?
Slobodan Milošević?

Perhaps it was a tie.

Posted by: cullen at March 7, 2007 07:08 AM

The word hate is not actually in the question is it? Reminds me of a surreptitious fellow I knew who was nominated at his HS for the most excellent scholarship program that claims your fair beloved yellow rose of a spouse. When asked what he would choose to pursue with a scholarship, he discussed at length his plans to be a fantastic engineer or computer systems analyst, explaining to the bewildered Mo'Head panel that he would be more than happy to use the full ride at North Carolina STate, the true ACC school of his dreams. Talk about gamesmanship and GO-(Pack)-nads.

Depending on the actual wording of the open-ended question in question, my Family Feud money's on:
1.Osama
2."W" or Hillary (sad commentary of divergence)
3. the K man (not Kosmo Kramer)
4. Laettner/Brian Davis/Hurley
5. the folks who actually closed Big Bertha

Great Code Word convo BTW.

What about ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend? Just a thought. On my Clown College application (back in 1975), one of the questions was "Which foreigner do you dislike the most?" I wonder what the answer to that would be today! (FYI, I answered "I don't dislike any foreigners as a group.")

rat face

Posted by: Andy at March 7, 2007 07:30 AM

No doubt it has to be the "Leader of Men" - Coach K.

Posted by: Sean M at March 7, 2007 07:33 AM

If the question is actually "My least favorite famous person from the last fifty years is _____", then I'll switch from Mr Prez to Ms Hilton. Or since they ARE trying to pursuade UNC folks, then Coach K.

Posted by: Tanya at March 7, 2007 08:58 AM

My mind says Osama, but my heart says K.

By the way, the ONLY thing that has kept my Sunday rage in check is all the wonderful media bashing of the Rat Bastard. And, no, I don't think it's excessive. It's ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

ahem.

Steinbrenner?

Posted by: caveman at March 7, 2007 09:39 AM

Koach Rat Bastard gets my vote.

Posted by: yaytee at March 7, 2007 11:01 AM

ann coulter

Posted by: tregen at March 7, 2007 11:01 AM

hmm, UBL would be best guess followed by W & cheney.

Posted by: CL at March 7, 2007 11:52 AM

I guess that kids would not say Bush or anyone political, as they are afraid of offending the committee. I'm sure they all went for a safe answer. They probably said they hate "hate itself," "Satan" or Hitler (for kids who aren't good at math).

Posted by: Piglet at March 7, 2007 01:15 PM

They picked Hitler. Our ever-dumber young generation either didn't read the question fully or didn't know that WWII was more than 50 years ago. This entry is gonna end up being one of those rants about how many honors students can't find Florida on a map or spell MTV.

Do I win the prize behind the door?

Posted by: noj at March 7, 2007 01:51 PM

i bet piglet is right with Hitler

Posted by: Rebecca at March 7, 2007 04:01 PM

Ian, what is the answer?

Posted by: ducky at March 7, 2007 04:48 PM

My money's on Paris Hilton - the whole "commanding attention of the world without any personal abilities or redeeming qualities" angle.

Posted by: Kois at March 7, 2007 07:32 PM

Was it some lame-ass shit like "injustice"?

Posted by: Greg T. at March 7, 2007 09:09 PM

Off topic...

I was listening to the final episode of Penn Jillette's radio show on FreeFM (From March 2nd.) He made reference (about 10 minutes in) to...

Ghost Chimp, M.D.

Posted by: Ian at March 7, 2007 11:23 PM

Turns out jen (above) was right. The actual question was "What is your least favorite famous person from the last fifty years?"

And then the answer makes more sense. At first blush, political figures like Bush or infamous figures like OBL don't register as "famous." Deduct that from the equation and go with "hated famous person" and you get Paris Hilton, which some of you guessed.

I was originally going to remark how "hate" is such a different concept, but instead it turns out that "famous" is. To his credit, my nephew picked GWB.

Greg T - Jillette actually used the phrase "Ghost Chimp, MD"? Man if that isn't the "Hundredth Monkey Effect" I don't know what is.

Posted by: Greg T. at March 8, 2007 12:22 PM

Ghost Chimp, M.D. I nearly fell off my chair.

About 10 minutes in...
http://podcast.penn.freefm.com/penn/253079.mp3

Too bad it was his last episode, he probably would have answered over the air where he heard the phrase. He seems reasonably plugged into his fan forums, maybe he can tell you where he first heard it. I tend to think it's more of a 100th Googler effect - nobody creates anything anymore, it's all borrowed (present company excepted.)

Posted by: Annie at March 8, 2007 02:04 PM

Cannot BELIEVE that about Ghost Chimp M.D.! Didn't you tell me & Greg, Ian, that when you jokingly told Quinn C. about it (responding to her stories about hearing outlandish pitches for new TV shows in the 90s) she said it had ALREADY BEEN PITCHED?!?

Next up: "Too Close For Larry"..and "Nick, Of Time"!
