yes, you're older now and a clever swine

7/30/07

I'm watching "Law & Order" and "The Simpsons", but I'm still getting most of my philosophy from Morrissey. I'm on a Mac writing late into the evening using Microsoft Word. I'm still a little bummed out that Carolina got bumped from the NCAA tournament at least two games too early, and now our star center/forward is going pro. Tessa and I hang out with a small group of writers in our weirdly creative town, and Chip, Bud, Jon, Salem and Lindsay are among my best friends in the world. It is 1989 and I'm a senior at the University of North Carolina.

For all this talk of change, it's incredible how much is exactly the same. Sometimes our culture moves so fast that it creates a blur, and can be barely told apart from a standstill.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Somewhat off subject, I had a similar feeling recently when listening to my new favorite band, Spoon. I bought their CD for my birthday because I kept reading great things about it, and it keeps getting better every time I listen to it. It seems very timeless in sound. Sometimes I can imagine I'm listening to the Beatles, the Stones, Elvis Costello or an 80s band like XTC. If I close my eyes I could be in any of those decades, but it's still 2007 I'm afraid.

As I have been thinking of this entry all day, I think it is brilliant. The only reason I can think of for so few responses is that it has left us speechless.

I cannot seem to find so many similarities between my 1989 life and my life today - aside from calling the same town my hometown.

If youre wondering why
All the love that you long for eludes you
And people are rude and cruel to you
Ill tell you why

You just havent earned it yet, baby
You just havent earned it, son
You just havent earned it yet, baby
You must suffer and cry for a longer time
You just havent earned it yet, baby
And Im telling you now ...

If youre wondering why
When all I wanted from life was to be famous
I have tried for so long, its all gone wrong
Ill tell you why
But you wouldnt believe me

You just havent earned it yet, baby
You just havent earned it, son
You just havent earned it yet, baby
You must suffer and cry for a longer time
You just havent earned it yet, baby
And Im telling you now ...
Ill tell you why
Ill tell you why

Today I am remembering the time
When they pulled me back
And held me down
And looked me in the eyes and said
You just havent earned it yet, baby
You just havent earned it, my son
You just havent earned it yet, baby
You must stay on your own for slightly longer
You just havent earned it yet baby
And Im telling you now ...

Good old JR, never was much of a pro.

I was at Rupp arena for the final game of that season. The band rode a tour bus [up 1 day and back the next] instead of flying. I got my heart broken in person by Glen Rice.

Thanks for the reminder.
