Before the weekend, I'd like to share a bizarre coincidence. I'm in a band right now, making some demos for songs I'm bringing in, and one of them is temporarily called "Iowa", based on my early upbringing in Cedar Rapids, IA. I'm trying to change the chorus because it's a little twee, but most everything else is inspired by the summer in Cedar Rapids when I turned 11.
Unrelatedly, we were at our friend Heather's restaurant tonight, and she told us about her myspace page where she keeps a blog. I've already got a MySpace page from years back that I rarely see, but I wanted to check if myspace.com/ianwilliams was available. Turns out, it's not, because...
...a guy named Ian Williams has it who happens to live in Cedar Rapids, IA (!) and is a musician working on demos of his own(!). And his music is actually kinda cool, poppy in tangents to my own taste - I was even thinking about covering one of his songs for fun, which is on an album called "11 Songs For Summer"(!). The coincidences never end, my friends.
Do any of you have MySpace or Facebook pages, by the way?
Posted by Ian Williams at August 2, 2007 11:37 PMI have a facebook page, which I started in order to spy on my students. Then I got kind of into it for a while. Then there started to be all these added applications (many of them pretty cool) which I have not played with and now I feel like an old person again.
I have a Facebook page, but haven't visited in a while. . . Isis, I feel your pain --the applications made me feel old again, too. But for about a month there, having a Facebook page made me feel at LEAST 10 years younger. sigh. . .
There is also Ian Williams who plays in Don Cabellero and Battles.
Visit KentWilliams.com some time ;-)
Facebook is definitely the place to be right now. They've opened up registration to anyone, and it's quickly becoming a powerful networking tool among business professionals. Plus, there are all types of new applications that incorporate your LinkedIn profile, Flickr photos, and pretty much anything imaginable. In short, it's everything that MySpace is not.
Get over there and send me a friend request:

I have a Facebook page and it has been a very successful tool in reconnecting undergrad and even high school pals as well as extended family. It is, in fact, a killer app as far as I am concerned and one I think that Dave Winer has yet to find a way to claim he created, something that makes it even more admirable.
I have neither -- I can barely keep up with my blog, much less maintain MySpace and/or Facebook. Besides, I'm too damn old for either one.

C'mon, Alan. Everybody knows Al Gore invented Facebook!
I always thought that to be on Facebook, you had to be a student? I am on myspace though.

(not that I don't occasionally overshare here...)

I found your blog while browsing the internet. I have been enjoying the way you think. And I have a myspace account.
Hey, this is the Ian Williams of 11 Songs For Summer. Did you ever end up covering a track? I'd love to hear it! :)
Ah man... not yet!
