longing for the old plantation

8/6/07

Must resort to CODE WORD today because of dental surgery in the morning. Here is my question: what place do you miss terribly right now, and can you link to a picture of it?

Here's mine:

So funny that this is your topic today. Every year me and my wife spend the first week of August in Northern Wisconsin because in a bizarre coincedence, my parents and her parents happen to own summer homes in the exact same town. It makes vacations super easy. This year however, we're planning a trip to Italy, so in order to conserve my precious little vacation time, I stayed back and she went. So now more than ever, I'm missing my parents place on Long Lake in Mercer, Wisconsin.

Ever the great wife, she did bring me back my favorite dish (on ice) from my favorite restaurant, so I was able to at least have a bit of the northwoods for dinner.

I guess I'm missing this place, since I had a long vivid dream about it last night. In my dream I was trying to get there but the ferries stopped running and I had to swim to the island while pulling my family in a canoe! I spent part of a lovely summer there 15 years ago working with the NHS doctor on this island. With temps reaching 100 here today the coast of Scotland would be a nice, cool place to be. Everyone hangs out at the one pub in town, the people are very friendly, and it doesn't get dark until midnight!

More dental surgery? Good grief. I am sorry to hear that. . . . hope it goes well. What exactly are you having done? Dental implants? Veneers? (like all the other Hollywood folk - ha! Just joking)

Your barn is huge! And that is the second floor?? Nice.

Right now, I am really missing my bed. You know how many people get depressed over the winter? SAD and all? Well, my time of despondency is always summer. I HATE summer. I hate the heat, hate the humidity, but most of all, I hate working during the summer (I think that all those years of being a student spoiled me -- I keep waiting for my "summer break", but it never comes!) Anyway, I would love to be in my bed right now, snoozing with my beagle.

In lieu of a photo of my bed, here is a link to the Na Pali Coast of Kauai. Tim and I were in Hawaii during June, 2002, and it was the best vacation ever. The Princeville area of Kauai was the most beautiful place I have ever been.

Given my druthers, I'd be there right now.

Oh, and this place was not too shabby. On the Big Island. I cried when we had to leave. Aloha!

I loved Arizona.

And, damn, that's an awesome barn. Although I'd be using that as an art studio rather than a basketball court. My workbench is crammed into a corner of a dark basement.

My partner and I were long distance for a few years while he was in a faculty position at UNM in Albuquerque and I was doing my postdoc at Harvard. Although I much prefer our life now that we live together in Boston, I find myself missing the New Mexico landscape terribly. The Sandia mountains overlooking the lights of Albuquerque and desert beyond, the dunes at White Sands, the rock formations... it all just struck me as really breathtaking. Of course, I'm sure it took on special significance for me, because every time I went there it meant that I was thousands of miles away from work and reunited with my beloved. But it will always be a special destination for us.

Love the hoops court! Awesome. Are those Christmas lights bunched up and hanging from the rafters?

I used to miss living by the ocean, but since three weeks ago we DO live by the ocean (well, the bay, who's counting) and I am happy as a... clam. Or, here in RI, "quahog." Which is the same thing but lots more fun to say.

You can see on my blog from last summer just how pretty it is where we live now. Funky ol' neighborhood; gorgeous views = affordable waterfront ambience. Yes, it took us a year to rehab the house and move in. Wouldn't want to be hasty! Worth the wait, I tell ya.

It Italy the hot chocolate is like pea soup. It's a chilly day here in PEI today and I can think of nothing that would hit the spot like a cup:

Is that a full length court with goals on both ends? Regardless, my husband has huge attic envy right now. Personally, I like the bee hive light decorations.

Orange and Durham Counties in North Carolina....no particular place...if I had to pick one I guess I'd pick the Durham Farmers Market.

That's easy... every summer I ache for the Colorado Rockies where I spent almost every summer through college... as I wade through the humidity in Atlanta I would give anything for a backpacking trip with old camp friends... pictured- McHenry's Peak as seen from the Black Lake Trail in Glacier Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park

For those of you UNC alumns, I am going to an 80's party at PLAYERS on Saturday night in Chapel Hill! That's right, it's still there. James' MBA program at Dook starts this week and strangely enough, 2 out of the 3 parties for the incoming class are in Chapel Hill. I'm so excited!

Montauk. http://www.emontauk.com/

We're not going this August for the first time in about 10 years and it makes my heart ache. Now that I'm thinking about it, my stomach is growling for a Lobster Roll! The Amagansett farmers market, fresh donuts in East Hampton, and the list goes on and on.

Posted by: Rebecca at August 7, 2007 05:55 PM

SLS: Have a great time! I would love to be a fly on the wall at that party. My husband's 2 years in business school were two of the most fun years of our marriage. So little stress, surrounded by awesome people, and just minutes from Chicago. You're going to have a great time!

It was officially 102 degrees F in Columbia SC today, and 111 in the parking lot below the old coliseum. Right now, I miss terribly:

I was actually looking for an apropos picture of Woollen Gymnasium, which many good folks know abuts this here beautiful edifice, alas, Woollen has a somewhat inauspicious exterior (which belies it's richer, and at this time of the year, considerably stickier underbelly).

Nice farm court, BTW. Hard(ly) foul.

kjf, when people play hoops upstairs, it sounds like ten people are playing with sawed-off shotguns.

Thanks, Ian. That picture brought a smile to my face.

Speaking of the Lodge, I bumped into Ricky Bell at the White Sox game tonight.

We're everywhere...

SLS - My wife and I met at Players just before she began her MBA (@Wake.) That was 13 years ago last week. Despite that, He's Not Here is one of the places I miss most. I loved the relaxed energy of a beautiful summer evening at He's Not.
