Safe travels. I believe the photo is eyeball related.

Is that an image of your retina taken with a Retinal camera?

Is there something wrong with your eye that we're supposed to be attempting to diagnose?

Oh, I hope Lulubeans feels better soon! I also think it's probably a retina. Or maybe the sun. Travel safe.

That's an eyeball!!! I hope La Luc(z) feels better soon. Does this mean you are in the Prius ALONE??? Crank the tunes, and safe travels!!

That's a retina. The vessels all come together into the optic nerve and that dark spot is the fovea or macula - and that one doesn't like entirely normal. Usually it's just one dark dot. What I don't know is what that abnormal light stripe is going from the optic nerve to the macula. It looks like the optic nerve is giving the macula the finger.
Hope Lucy feels better and you have a good trip.

I guess that could be a retinal scar there or could be macular degeneration although I'm not sure. Eyeballs aren't my thing. In clinic when we use those little opthalmoscopes to look in people's undilated eyes we see only one small part of the retina. These photos are amazing.

I think it's whatever Neva said.

Dang, Neva beat me to it.

Happy trails!

Definitely an eyeball, but I love that it looks like a filtered photo of the sun. Nature... gotta love all the symmetry etc.

To Craighill: "Spearmint Rhino" -- wow, far out. Sounds like a 60s psychedelic band. A la "Strawberry Alarm Clock." :-)

I had one of these done at my last visit to the eye doctor - the visit where my contact prescription got even weaker than the year before. Go figure.

Anyway, had I not seen that picture at the eye doc, I would say that it looks like the orb/globe that Queen Amidala presented to JarJar's people at the end of Episode One.

Egg candling.

Charlie Brown with a hangover.

Good lord, Ian, how in the world did you get that photo of my cervix!?

Posted by: Ian at August 9, 2007 11:50 AM

Indeed, it is my right retina. Neva, they did a 2-hour thorough checkup and said that my eyes were better than 20-20, even 8 years after LASIK. She looked all the way back in there and said they were perfect. But now you've got me worried!

Posted by: Neva at August 9, 2007 2:05 PM

Don't worry Ian. I think that white stripe is just flash from the camera - artifact probably, but if you look at normal retina photos it's not there. I'm sure it's fine though if they said it is. I'm no eye doctor! Here is a picture of what the textbooks will show..http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://webvision.med.utah.edu/imageswv/retina.jpeg&imgrefurl=http://webvision.med.utah.edu/sretina.html&h=515&w=621&sz=57&tbnid=X1SrEFJePe-Y9M:&tbnh=113&tbnw=136&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dretina%2Bphoto%26um%3D1&start=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=1

Yeek! Ian! The front of one of your eyeballs has been blown off!

Posted by: cullen at August 10, 2007 5:10 AM

That mystery light thingy is probably just the 'nother awesome idea' bulb burning brightly in Ian's brain. Either that, or it's the proverbial 'fire in the belly' transmogrified. Eyes ARE the windows to the soul. Get on board the I-train. Safe travels.

I knew what the photo was, but I cheated: I work for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It was odd to show up for my daily xtcian visit and see a retina.

I've commented here before and worked at the DTH with Ian a thousand years ago, so I hope the following public service announcement can slide by...

The Academy just launched a public awareness campaign called EyeSmart. Key thing: recommendation that all adults get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 (if you have risk factors or a family history of eye disease, go sooner).

Funny, I was just going into get my eyes tested to renew
my NY drivers license (online) and I got the whole shebang. Really glad I did it, and y'all should follow bill's advice!
