First off, let's give credit where credit is due: Xanax works. Once you've got your own body weight and predilections understood, you can give yourself the perfect small dose and get on the plane... and the rest is, for all intents and purposes, TIME TRAVEL. Inasmuch we're all time-traveling into the future anyway, at the approximate speed of one minute per minute, Xanax speeds that process up considerably. I take half a pill just after takeoff, somewhere over San Bernardino, and five minutes later I'm landing in Charlotte, NC.
It doesn't always work so flawlessly, especially when Lulu Crazypants has a lot of things to get off her chest, but it's up there on my Top Ten List of Drugs. What else is on there? Glad you asked!
1. Dexy's Midnight Runners
2. Afrin
3. Allopurinol (fuck off, kidney stones!)

Posted by Ian Williams at February 4, 2008 07:47 PMmy dear, sweet ambien. which i am without at this 4:31am moment.
you know, i've read all the horror stories about binge eating and driving on ambien. now, there was that one time that i woke up with am empty bag of egg noodles in bed with me. but other than that, the worst i've done is compose a few frightening emails on that stuff. too bad the news reports didn't reveal the REAL horrors of ambien: night-blogging.
anyway, ambien is my secret weapon in my insomniac world.
So.

Ambien is also the one thing that keeps me going. I have the most severe, intractable insomnia. It's amazing how long I can go without sleeping. I look and feel horrible, can't think straight, but my body seems to push on without sleep. I've been through every kind of insomnia treatment program there is and have amassed a whole arsenal of non-medical tools to help me sleep. Fortunately, most nights, I do okay without taking a pill. But there are those nights where sleep just isn't happening, when I have a really important meeting the next day and just can't afford to drag in looking like death warmed over... and ambien is the only thing that gets me through.
Oh, and that morning shot of caffeine courtesy of Diet Coke.

When I am truly low-down, the only thing that calms me is grabbing my beagle and taking a nap with him. He falls asleep next to me with his chin propped on my shoulder. He snores in my ear, I doze off, and all is right with the world.

Ian, did I see a blurb on CNN that the writer's strike might soon come to an end? I'm still no closer to clearing out my DVR of original shows that I never got to, but now that football is over, I'm ready for some new episodes of the shows where I am caught up.
Any insight about whether the strike is over?
