kiss me kiss me kiss me

3/5/08

As I'm battling some intense weariness (and yesterday's blog comments were awesome), I thought I'd answer Neva's question with a call for fundraising. She asked me about Larry Kissell, and I'll just say he's an awesome guy who ran for Congress in North Carolina in 2006, and lost by 330 votes to a total billionaire douchebag. He's a high school social studies teacher, whip-smart, and is running for the 8th Congressional District again, and it would be a HUGE pickup if he wins. The Eighth is a vague middle-south district between Kannapolis and Laurinburg, the undulating lands that bore many of your forefathers. If you can, donate some cash to the Kissell campaign.

Oh, just so you know who he's running against, his opponent (again) is Robin Hayes, a wingnut moron who said "stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ - everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior." (Take a look at the headline.) Hayes also flip-flopped on CAFTA, which has proven devastating to NC's textile workers, while himself being one of the richest people in Congress because of... yep, his grandfather's textile empire.

Oh, didn't I mention Hayes was a Dook graduate? Must have slipped my mind. But yes, he is.

What was that donation page for Larry Kissell again? Right here!

What a great civics lesson for his students past and present. They are very lucky. I love the story of "average guy takes on the system to run for office."

May I make a plug here for our Best Man and Dear Friend, as well as my son's namesake, who will be running against the GOP's #3 in the House, a young man who has run unopposed since his first win at the ripe old age of 26?

The campaign is at its nascent stages, but perhaps it will be one worth watching.... www.teamtudor.org ; I could spend all day trolling the Links page.

The DLC abandoned Kissell last time around -- gave him nothing, figuring he didn't stand a chance. While they hopefully won't make that mistake again, he really needs the money to pay off campaign costs from last time, let alone run again against the despicable Hayes.

Everyone please take a moment to remember this year's student body president of UNC. She was found murdered today. Tar Heel Nation mourns the loss.

I heard the news this afternoon. Terrible.

Yes, this is a horribly sad thing. We should be thankful for every minute we have.

Thanks for the info on Kissel Ian.
Ya'll have a good weekend.

Police found Eve Carson's body lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Hillcrest Circle yesterday around 5am. She had multiple gunshot wounds and police are looking for her vehicle, which they believe was stolen during the incident.

The Daily Tar Heel has a story that they're updating throughout the day as more information becomes available. www.dailytarheel.com

The bell tower has been ringing its lowest tone every 30 seconds since 2:45. It's going to continue until 3:00. There's a vigil on campus tonight at 7:00 in Polk Place.

East Montgomery is my alma mater, though Mr Kissell started teaching as a second career long after I left in 1983. The Eagles' loss will be Congress's gain this fall.
