runnin' the film projector, scorin' the ladies

6/5/08

Okay, this "not having my computer" thing has really screwed up my blogging week, but I did find something vaguely interesting. While consolidating our Brooklyn apartment, I found some old drafts of projects, among which was the first stab we took at creating the "What Kind of Dork ARE You?" poster. Greg Humphreys and I did this in 1996, and it's still cute today.

Plotting every dork on an X-Y axis, X being "social" vs. "asocial" and Y being "creative" vs. "mechanical"? BRILLIANT, I SAY! We should make this poster for real someday.

If I had to self-identify on your graph.... (-2, 0)

As a testament to at least some dorkness on my part, isn't the y-axis usually the vertical scale?

Matt, yep, his chart has the axes switched from the basic Cartesian plane. Though in application, the choice of x or y on the axis is completely arbitrary (t, s, q, whatever) as long as the relationship between the two variables is properly represented. You could call the axes "UNC" and "Dook" for all intensive purposes.

As we know the smarts of the author, my guess is it is a subtle extension of the "What kind of dork are you?" If you pick up on the x-y switch, then that alone can plot you higher on the dork scale.

This map classifies them by hobby, but there could be a whole nother one just classifying by social achievements or lack thereof. Like, "never kissed a boy until the age of 23" (hypothetically speaking) would be somewhere...again, hypothetically.

that is hysterical. i would add rtmp majors and theatre geeks near the comic heads, history buffs/policy wonks next to english majors and student gov't officials, and electronic music gear heads next to the college radio cats. oh, and anime/japanophiles somewhere up in the top left quadrant.

Heh heh... I don't cartoon as much these days, now that I'm an "internet junkie." using pen and paper alot less and Photoshop alot more. Other artists find this to be the case?

I do still keep a sketchbook, and i'd be glad to illustrate for you anytime! (+3, +4)

Me too, Kaz! Oh, how hard we laughed at these doodles--there is real mileage there--oh me, the Comic Book Store Cashier--replete with small potbelly, then-obscure t-shirt, and receding ponytail, what could be funnier?!?

What a fundoodle!

Trying to locate my gridpoint, I determined that I'm all over the map - sort of "Deadhead With Sliderule."
