I do love this country, I swooningly love my daughter, and man, do I ever love my wife
Congratulations!
I am speechless and insomniac here on the East Coast. What a night. What a country. What a victory.
Now, can we please PLEASE all get along? Our president wants it, and right now I want what he wants.
But first: HOORAYYYY for us!
I was fortunate enough to be in Grant Park tonight for the speech from our President-Elect. I didn't have tickets to be inside the special fenced-in area, but I was in the overflow crowd.
A-mazing.
I have no words. The electricity, the energy, the excitement that was running through the crowd tonight gave me goosebumps that have yet to disappear. America made history tonight and I am so pleased that I'll be able to tell my children that I was there at that rally, and that I voted for Obama.
HOORAY!
yeaaaaahh!!!
welcome to the united states of obamaca, motherfuckers!
Great news !! - we're celebrating over here in England - congratulations America !!!
Thank God we got it right.
No need to stay up late writing Coastopia posts this year, eh? ;)
That chart in your den -- I'm no scientist, but doesn't it resemble a strand of DNA?
Or maybe just two snakes wrestling. Take your pick.
:-)
a really, truly amazing moment in time.
i had a cab driver this morning who hails from west africa (i asked), and he said "could you imagine if he (BHO) was your kin?! i have a friend from kenya and he was dancing in the streets more than all of us!"
imagine what it took to get this young immigrant man to the place where he so closely identified with the president elect of the u s of a. it was a thrilling, marvelous point to ponder indeed. so many more to come.
now we just have to hope upon hope that we can get thru all that we have to get thru. as my cabdriver said: "At least, now, we have hope."
signed: a registered republican who voted for mccain
Xuxe's comment was so awesome that it made me shoot coffee through my nose!
I stayed up all night to watch every bit of the coverage. I laughed, I cried, I hugged my beagle. Twas a wonderful night.
me, too, up all night, crying and laughing and soooooo proud to be an american for the first time in sooooo long. and NC didn't do so badly, either :-). I just heard Harry Smith and Goddess Maya Angelou discussing this miracle on national TV--which in itself is a miracle---keep 'em coming!!!!!
Look at North Carolina representin' all around!
Mecklenburg County (Charlotte area) for Obama!
Bye bye Liddy Dole and Robin Hayes!
We have no cable service and we don't get any reception, but my husband and I sat hunched in front of our computer screen for half the night last night. I had tears running down my eyes for the better part of 4 hours and as I continue to read the news this morning the tears are falling again. I'm ecstatic, awed, and relieved. Oh, and soooo thrilled to finally be living in a blue state -- Hooray for VA!
I'm still awake from last night, and feeling very mixed emotions right now. I'm beyond excited and proud that Obama won last night, but I'm beyond disappointed in reading about Prop 8.
It's so disheartening that Arizona, Florida, and California passed measures last night to ban gay marriage.
Additionally, Arkansas passed a measure that prevents unmarried "sexual partner[s]" from adopting children or from serving as foster parents. The measure specifies that the prohibition applies to both opposite-sex as well as same-sex couples.
It's a sad day when intolerance, hatred, and bitterness of the soul win out over justice and fairness across the country.
I have always said that it is just a matter of how hard you want to apologize when we as a people come to see how foolish we once were. I guess that Arkansas, Florida, Arizona, and even California want to have an awful lot to apologize for someday.
How can people be so small and so mean?
Was it just me or did the crowds cheering outside of the White House last night look as though they were ready to storm the gates? I wonder if W. was cowering behind the curtains. . . .
Nice post. Let's all support our President-elect.
So, so happy!! I'm so used to being disgruntled that I halfway don't know what to do. WOO! Okay, now let's get to work......
Last night in Washington, DC, it was like a heavy wet blanket that has been covering the capital city had finally been lifted. Until about 5:00 this morning, fireworks were going off in my neighborhood, people were cheering, parades of cars with people hanging out the windows went up and down U Street, 14th Street, and 16th Street. We went down to the White House around midnight, where a few thousand people converged for a spontaneous rally. We were able to hear Obama's speech because a generous cab driver pulled over to the curb, rolled down his windows, and cranked the radio so about 10 of us on the corner could hear. He sat there not taking fares for the whole speech. Unbelievable!
Philadelphia downtown exploded (peacefully) last night. I can't remember any election in my lifetime that has created this kind of response.
I'm just hoping that NC finishes the way it is right now. I'm busy teaching my kids that they should always do what's right and not just what's convenient and I've done that in this election. Did my research and voted for the candidate that I thought had policy positions that I believed in. By my own standards, I did what was right and not just what was convenient and that should be enough -- but it would be nice for once to vote for a presidential candidate that actually won the state in which I live.
Anyone else notice the stark contrast between Obama's statement in his acceptance speech, "And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too."
vs. Bush, "when you have political captial, spend it."
Screw you, Bush. THIS is how we're going to fix things.
well, i'm just so thankful the presidential election results came in earlier than the prop 8 results - at least last night i had pure jubilation, now it's totally bittersweet, happy mixed with horrified. i hope the film Milk will have some impact. something. i don't know what will sway those prop 8 voting neanderthals short of the discovery that jesus was gay. and now we have the Mormons leading the charge to define marriage? puh-lease!
Tempered but content excitement last night and this morning, as there are still many, many things to fix/accomplish, but FINALLY!!! GW Chimp has been in power the whole time we have been married. We are same age, and RR was in power the whole time we were teenagers.
Our hangover from 04 has been pounding the insides of our frontal lobes with 9lb hammers since, esp. since our daughters were born in 04 and 06.
The historic events last night give us HOPE for the future of our small family, HOPE for the future of our large U.S. family.
It will probably take decades to undo some of the damage done the past 8 years, point blank!
But let's start now, right here, right now, on the brink of the future.
and......exhale! finally.
but the prop 8 results are unfortunate. i guess we need to take baby steps in this country.
and good riddance to liddy dole. saw kay hagan on tv today and she said she knows how to bring sides together - one of her kids is a dookie and the other one is a tarheel.
All the street celebrations I saw on the tv from all over the country and the world and those I saw in my own neighborhood in Brooklyn reminded me of nothing else more than the scenes that George Lucas added to the end of Return of the Jedi, where people on all these different planets were celebrating the news that the Emperor had been dethroned and a new future was at hand.
Just one nerd's hyperbolic impression.
I was not so impressed with Hagan. I don't care much for Dole either. I was ready to leave the ballot empty for this race until the "There is no God" commercial aired. Hagan got my vote.
For the record, I am unaffiliated and a Baptist.
Obama '12: It is my hope that he will be so successful that this will be a walk in the park.
just occurred to me where "hello world" is from.
lovely touch.
It is indeed, a good day. Long time coming. A much needed shift of the political winds.
Now - we can be a more kinder, gentler nation among the brotherhood of nations. The middle eastern muslim countries of the world need to be listened to and respected. Listen to them...they've got something to say (sans women rights, homosexuality, multi-wives and killing the infidel).
Get the troops out of Iraq - it's not our country, they don't want us. If Iran invades them...well..that's not our problem, right? If Iraq gets nukes...well, maybe President-elect Obama can negotiate with Iran - better to talk than to rattle swords.
Taxes - yes, time for the top wage earners to pay the piper. The top 5% pay 80% of the total tax pie - and they need and should pay more.
National health insurance - about time. all the other developed nations have it. President O will get those top 5% wage earners to pay for it - sorry Joe the Plumber but we're not in Kansas anymore.
Pro Choice - an unexpected pregnancy is an inconvenience right? so, if need be, eliminate the problem.
Capital Punishment - tell me, what good does killing a criminal do? unless, of course, the person is not out of the womb. But once out, no gas.
Save the whale, the tree - abort the child if need be.
Love the zoo but to hell with
No more drilling for pete's sake! Leaded gas in China, Russia and Europe = not good but we must tolerate. But drilling in USA is a no-no-go. Not nearly as damaging as leaded gas but this always us to provide an example to the rest of the world. And the rest of the world, I believe, will appreciate this.

Huzzah for Obama! At frickin' last, a fresh start and in a better direction!
For Prop 8 and similar, so sad. But please notice Obama was probably the first president-elect ever to mention "...gay, straight..." in his acceptance speech. There's hope yet. I don't mean to be glib, but the fight's far from over.
Ah Sammy, I can't tell you the relief of not having to take you people seriously anymore...
Where did you get that timeline? I love it!
