Countdown to Labor Day and End of Summer Blog Randomness™ continues...
a) You are driving across the state of New Mexico on I-10, and the speed limit is marked as 75. How fast would you set your cruise control?
b) You are at a convenience store in desperate need of toothpaste, and there are three options: Pepsodent, Sensodyne and Aquafresh. Which do you choose?
c) While standing up and relaxed, you are given a slight shove [from behind -ed.]. Which foot do you instinctively put out for balance?
d) You must buy a house. The silver house was built two years ago and is an ultramodern, angular home with lots of windows and an immense, lofty den and entertainment space. New kitchen with stainless steel Viking stove and appliances. There are only two real bedrooms, but they're huge, and guests can sleep in makeshift nooks.
The blue house was built in 1823 and is old hardwood, with two woodstoves, a library and six (albeit small) bedrooms. It has a wrap-around porch, an old kitchen, and a large dining room - there is old chiseled details on each mahogany door.
Both houses have the same view of a mountain range in the distance and are equal in every other way (school district, bills, etc.) Which do you choose?
Posted by Ian Williams at September 1, 2009 10:37 PM1) 84, I've always heard that under 10 mph OVER the limit is kosher.
2) The cheapest but if all were the same price: Pepsodent
3) My Left Foot.
4) Assuming the 'bones' of the 1823 house are solid and there are no major issues (leaky roof, basement), the blue house.
1) 80. In some places 83 or 84, but in wide open spaces, cops are bored and love to stop you.
2) The smallest size.
3) Depends on which side I'm nudged. Tried it. Works both ways.
4) Neither. I'd rent an apartment and forget about maintenance and landscaping. But I'd like the apartment as roomy as your glass house. Dream on...
1) 82
2) Aquafresh
3) Right Foot
4) The blue House and I would like to come and visit.
80
Aquafresh
Right
The old house - library, wood stoves, wrap around porch - no contest
80
aquafresh
left, I think
blue house, every day of the week and twice on Sundays
80
Aquafresh
Left
Blue house (Wrap around porch)
1. 80
2. Aquafresh
3. I'd fall down, I'm sure
4. silver house - only because I've been there, done that on old houses. no desire to do it again. But if it were my first house, totally the blue one.
a - about 84ish
b - sensodyne
c - left foot
d - the modern silver house. I love modern architecture
a) 84ish, but depending on traffic conditions, I'd set it as high as 94.
b) None - my periodontist recommends that we not use toothpaste, but use straight baking soda. If I had to choose, then probably Popsodent.
c) Right foot
d) Blue House
1) 80 ...I know they say 10 but I think 5 is safer. Also, BEWARE the photo enforcement cameras in Arizona...11 over and it's a $190 fine.2) Pepsodent...happy childhood memories
3) depends on where the shove comes from
4) Modern house....I love mid century modern architecture....although if the blue house is the one I'm thinking of, I am going to be very sad if you don't buy it.
84
Aquafresh
Left foot
Modern
1. 84, although I will likely put my foot on the pedal and go faster occasionally b/c I can't stand not to and it's subconscious.
2. the cheapest b/c I'm sure the convenient store is ripping me off terribly.
3.left foot
4. I'd be extremely torn. If the new house had three bedrooms that would be it no question. My kids can't share a bedroom so no 2 BR house for us. If the old house was in great shape with a recent roof, good heating and central air and I had enough extra money to do a kitchen renovation before moving in - the blue house. Picky, picky. Can you just build something instead?
1. 75 mph
2. Doesn't matter. Eeny, meeny, miney, mo.
3. Left foot. Why? I stand at rest on my right leg with the left foot not as firmly planted. To balance, I would shift more to the left side.
4. The old house, absolutely no question. I have never owned any but old houses and they have never let me down. Enduring charm, solid materials, and knowing that families going back 100 years or more have walked the same floors, slept in the bedrooms, etc. Priceless. Small rooms? Removing walls is child's play. :-)
1. 80mph
2. Aquafresh
3. Left foot (regular-footed skater/surfer)
4. Blue house, but can we take the new kicthen appliances from the other ;) Blue house every time.
Blue house. It has secrets (and space) to explore and enjoy.
(a) depends on my mood and vehicle, but I'll say 83
(b) aquafresh
(c) right
(d) Blue house, many little bedrooms are a good thingI would also like to raise two further questions from yesterday's post
(e) How far can you hit a 25-wood?
(f) How do you pronounce vitiligous?
1. Fast. Probably close to 90. Being a lawyer does bring certain privileges. I could find a lawyer in NM that went to UNC or Wake.
2. smal tube of aquafresh.
3. my best foot. always helps to put one's best foot forward.
4. Newer house. A lot easier to add a porch than to polish a turd.
1. Colonel Mustard
2. In the living room
3. Knife
While I covet the modern house and often wish I was the sort of person that could live in a place like that, I would always feel like a guest. The blue house, with all its challenges and flaws, would be my home.
1. I would set the cruise to 9 over. But I would lead traffic, no matter where the speeds took me. If the pack did 95, I'd be doing 96. If I was alone, I'd drop it back down to the cruise level and look for roadrunners. Or ACME signs with flattened coyotes nearby.
2. Aquafresh.
3. The other person's foot, after I reached back to grab them, Chuck Norris style, and warned them never to touch me again. Or, let's be honest. I'd probably fall and catch myself on my hands and knees.
4. The newer house. Much less likely to be haunted. And, as Dean said so eloquently, can't polish a turd. Now that's funny. I don't care who you are.
1. 79. For 55mph roads, I've always done 64, but I recall that the 70mph law made it a really stiff penalty to drive even 75, so I'm more cautious now.
2. Aquafresh. Sensodyne numbs your gums a bit, and freaks me out.
3. Tough choice. Assuming that the modern home is intelligently designed and sturdily constructed (both rarities with modern homes), I would be tempted to say the silver house. Especially if it were sensitive to the context of the neighborhood, more energy efficient, etc. But I've got nothing against blue house, and would choose it if the above conditions didn't hold.
1. 83
2. Reluctantly, saccharine sweet Aquafresh. Aren't the other two for gum issues? I'm disgusted that, with age, I've become attached to things like fennel toothpaste and my memory foam pillow.
3. left
4. Blue house, assuming good condition or sufficient $ for repairs. I grew up in a house built in the 1920s and miss unexpected nooks, glass door knobs, windows in closets. I also love imagining the life of old things before they were mine.
1. 78
2. aquafresh
3. left
4. blue house
1. 79-80
2. Sensodyne for me, Aquafresh if it's also for my kids
3. I'd fall on my face
4. I'd like to be modern, but I'm blue house all the way. I'd knock down a couple of walls between bedrooms, probably, as my boys share a room.
a) 75 as I don't know the local law or the local sports teams to talk up when I get stopped;
b) Aquafresh as the TV as have the best tongue licking video ever;
c) left as I am right footed in both football field goal and soccer corner kick kicking and the left foot is the brace that holds up the cannon.
d) blue house as it has already lived through the 100 year storms.
1)80, or if my car is smooth, 84
2)aquafresh
3)can't tell you without recreating the event. Alas, no volunteers.
4) The modern one. Only because I have had enough old, cozy homes in my life. Somethings has died in the crawl space of my current old, cozy home. Who will venture to get it out?
In accordance with the traffic around me. If road is mostly deserted and it's daytime with decent weather, probably 75.
Pepsodent, right, blue house (assuming blue house in great repair. I'm not about to buy a fixer-upper, but I hate vaulted ceilings. They're a waste of space)
1) 72 mph. Any faster and fuel economy decays to unacceptable levels; slower and you'll get creamed by a truck.
2) Easy: AquaFresh. Stripes!
3) Left foot. I'm regular-footed, so my weight is probably on my right foot, leaving my left foot free to prevent a face plant.
4) The heating cost of the blue house will eat you alive. I bought the modern two-bedroom house last year, so this year I'll buy the blue house, salvage the cute bits to sell on craigslist, and bulldoze the remainder into a heap to burn. On the site I'll build a simple single level duplex, which I'll rent to my aging mom and inlaws.
1) in the desert over 90 w/ radar detector
2) aqua fresh
3) left
4) blue house and redo the kitchen
That would be "lives" of old things. Why, hours later while dining with my kids at Elmo's, does this edit pop into my head?
a.) 79. Without cruise control, I would drive about 84.
b.) Aquafresh. Of course.
c.) Left.
d.) I could make my home in either one. Perhaps the silver one in the country and the blue one in the city? That maybe sounds right.
1. 75, cruise control takes all the fun out of speeding.
2. Aquafresh
3. Right
4. Blue HouseIf you ever decide to sell something, those of us who responded to the quiz, will be good customers, regardless of our answers. :)
I was driving...............I did't care about my teeth.......someone shoved me...............I did not care about the structure of the house........I just wanted shelter with the mountains to look over me............ and me to look over them
A) 83
B) Aquafresh
C) Left
D) The modern. Ideally I think we'd like an older home with modern updates, but I stuck to your rules and picked one.
They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon.
